This one didn't move at all, that's why I thought it was dead. When I nudged it's butt it winked at me. It was cool. I'm starting to really take notice of the turtles I see now that I've found a somewhat rare one.

It is always good to see softshells. Looks like it might be a female looking for a place to lay eggs. Nice photos.

This wasn't a planned turtle find, but I did happen upon one unexpectedly. I've seen plenty of box turtles and even had a snapper outside my school building not too long ago, but I hadn't ever seen a softshell around in my three years of nature photography, so today was special. I found him in the grass where I was ambling about looking for good shots of wildflowers, box turtles, cranes and ibis and the Canada geese (like I typically do) and at first I thought he was a misplaced rock. Then I thought he was dead, but it turned out he was quite alive (I nudged him with my toe). He was about a foot long I'd say. The only reason I know he was a soft shell turtle at all was that I went to the zoo two weeks ago and saw the Nile softshell. They're shaped pretty much identically. I'm much more of a bird and insect person, but I'm happy to contribute to any natural cataloging of species, so everyone can have free access to my pictures of the fellow. I've put every one I took up on photobucket at this link: (http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/aa65 … G_3112.jpg) just keep moving forward on them to go through them all.
