Topic: Looking for Some Copperhead Help! =D

So, as I mentioned in my last post, I'm working with Hendrix College's Dr. Harper on a project with Copperheads this summer! I'm trying to see whether the Arkansas River acts as a barrier for the snakes, so in order to do this I'll be out in the field collecting samples from specimens. I'll need approximately 20-25 samples from each of these regions: Ozarks, Arkansas River Valley, Ouachitas. I've already got several known locations of snakes already in captivity that I can sample, but I'm hoping to find some more so I can cut down my field work, thus getting more done on my project this summer. That's where your part comes in. I'm hoping to get some tail clippings or shed skins from live snakes, though I can take tail clippings from other snakes found DOR. I'll also need just a quick documentation of where you found it. Mile markers, roads, even counties you're in when you find it, that'd be great.

So over the next few weeks, if you're willing to bag a copperhead, live or dead, please shoot me an e-mail and we'll get out to you as soon as possible. You can reach me at yablickdj@hendrix.edu. I'll be checking for some good news several times throughout the day. Thanks again, and I hope to hear from some of you soon!

Seriously, you should be able to get these numbers with a little bit of effort, help or no help from others.  Copperheads are super easy to find this time of year.  Just drive some back roads between 8-11pm on warmer evenings and you'll get tons.   wink

I have a captive and you are welcome to the next shed.  I'll also keep an eye out for DORs to clip.  (Personally, I'm going to let the live specimens be to avoid some unnecessary hassle...since I think you'll get your numbers anyway.)

Actually, I guess I should ask...  Do you need specimens that are "spread out" or could they come from just a couple of locations?

Preferably more "spread out" as it would probably give some better data, but a few from similar locations wouldn't hurt. Tomorrow is officially my first field-day and we'll be passing through Clinton and moving north for a couple nights of camping. We've already spoken to several interpreters from state parks that say they have snakes available as well. And as you said, they're moving in masses currently, so I'm sure we'll come across them as we go! I appreciate such a quick response and will definitely be in contact with you in the next week or 2 about a sample  big_smile

I'll keep a look out for you since I'm in Conway.

if found dead do you want it frozen so it will not decompose?

I'll be out there in a week or two if you still need some. I'll be around the Ft. Smith area and am planning on doing lots of road cruising. I'd be glad to bag any DOR's. Do you just need tail clippings?

Also, PM sent.

Htruex, yes I would appreciate it if whatever snakes found were kept in the freezer so I can run tests wig whatever samples i get later.

Mikemike, I would be very glad if you found an copperheads dor. I've been out every night this week and have had some luck but not great luck. Whatever copperheads you find will be greatly valued! I'm just looking for tail clippings, so if you find a snake, bag it and we can get in touch and I can pick it up from wherever!

No problem. I'll keep my eyes peeled. If you respond to my PM, leave me your phone number. I don't have a cell right this second, but I'll have one shortly. It'll be easier to keep in touch this way. I'm not positive what my internet situation is going to be when I first get back there.

Thanks to all that are helping with David's project.  We could really use some more AR River Valley samples (Atkins samples from Heath are a big help) and Ouachita samples (other than Mena).
