It is illegal to sell, barter, or trade any native reptile or amphibian from Arkansas without proper documentation.

Some common considerations before purchasing a reptile or amphibian:

  • Many snakes, especially pythons and boas, grow to monsterous sizes that may require an entire room to house as adults.  A two-foot baby Burmese Python can easily grow to over 15 feet as an adult.  The market is oversaturated with giants, so don't expect anyone else (epecially a zoo) to take the hassle off your hands.

  • Keeping a venomous reptile is a HUGE responsibility!!!!   yikes  It is literally a life-and-death decision.  Without the proper training and experience, it may well be suicidal.  There is a very long list of details to consider before making the decision to purchase a venomous reptile.  It is not a decision to make lightly or hastily.

  • Many herps live for a very long time.  Some commonly kept snakes can live 20-30 years.  Some turtles can live over 120 years!  Please be prepared for a lifetime commitment.

  • Herps require special care that is very different from keeping a dog or cat.  Some require special lighting, housing, or food.  It could be said about many, "look, but don't touch!"  Some are delicate to handle, others are poisonous, others are as mean as snot and will not hesitate to bite!  The majority of herps simply do not like to be petted--at all!

If you are new to herptoculture, Cornsnakes and Kingsnakes are often cited as being a good beginner's pet.

Before making a purchase, ask lot's of questionsDo your homework!  Don't expect anyone else to warn you before you make a bad decision.
