Topic: Ringed Salamander Migration in NW Arkansas

The time is ripe!  Caught one on my parents' driveway, took some pictures, and then released.  Saw another one crossing the road, but couldn't stop for it.

Unfortunately, I didn't see any in "Peeper Pond" by my house.  Maybe tonight if the rain keeps up?

Sadly, I ran across a FRESHLY hit black rat snake on my way home...it was huge too...but obviously crossing this busy road in the rain/55 degree temps...who woulda thunk it?

Checked "Peeper Pond" again last night and drove a few roads.  No annulatum still; which makes me think they may not breed in this pond afterall.  I did see several Cave Sallies (6+) and Slimies (3) crossing the roads.

Re: Ringed Salamander Migration in NW Arkansas

A week or so ago, I got a tip about a road for Ringed Salamanders.  With the rain moving through last night as I was driving past the area, I decided to take a quick detour and give it a shot.  In no time at all, I spotted 6 annulatum!

The road sits at the base of a wooded hillside with several cattle ponds in pasture below.  All of the annulatum were moving back up the hill, likely in reverse of their breeding migrations a few weeks back.

The other interesting thing about this tip is that the woman told me of one road-killed salamander she's seen that was LARGER than a Ringed...and NOT a Spotted!  Although she did not know what it was herself, I wonder if it might have been a Tiger?  In any case, I'll be checking this road periodically in hopes...

Kory, I was wondering if you have followed up on this at all? With the chances for rain in the next few days, I have been thinking about tigers. I may be interested in going out with you if you do. You still have my home phone number?
