Topic: Report- no pics

Well, in a spur of the moment decision due to the changing weather, Jeremy and I decided to take a day off yesterday to xplore the rattlesnake habitat near Natural Dam. (sorry Van!) We worked our butts off, but found very little. Again though, perfect habitat, except for not finding any snakes!  Will post some pics soon, but here's what we found:
1- Osage Copperhead
3- ringnecks
2-ground skinks
3- black (western) rat snakes (2 were fresh dor)

Did do some PR work with the landowner...interesting stuff- he's never found anything but atrox on his place..no timbers.  Smallest one he killed this year was 56".  He has a nice pile of tin behind his barn that'll need to be flipped in the spring.  For some reason, this valley seems to be 'atroxville'. His neighbors have killed 2 this year too...so it seems there is/was a population there. We scoured the slopes trying to find someone hanging out at a den site, but came up empty.  Oh well, there's always next year!

Thats ok dude.....

Just don't come crying to me next time I find a pigmy mad

Seriously, sorry to hear you didn't find any atrox.  I wouldn't have been able to make it anyhow.  Maybe in the spring...

Re: Report- no pics

Probably it's getting to be a bit late in the year for rattlesnakes.  Most in Beaupre's study call it quits by mid-October...ish.  Usually they head right in to their hibernacula from their foraging grounds.  They don't seem to "hang out" by their dens in the fall, like they do in the spring.

Re: Report- no pics

I'm glad my winter trip to tampa won't be bothered by hibernating snakes, because they seem to always be plenty even during the winter months down there!

Re: Report- no pics

As of Tuesday, only 4 of the 14 currently tagged were down.  That may soon change with our cold night temps.

Re: Report- no pics

Yeah- tuesday night i called beaupre to see where his snakes were...said he tracked 6 on tues and only 2 were under at that point...so thats what sold me on going wednesday (i saw this colder weather coming on the forcaste)- i figure it was our last 'herping hurrah' for this year.  What we need is more eyes on the ground...I guarantee if we had a few more bodies looking, we'll turn up a few. Thats where ya'll come in!  But again, we assume the atrox are gonna behave the same way as the timbers...but do we really know?  Very curious about these things in our range.

Dont have any plans for mid april, you will be getting a call to help, so dont go making any plans.

Re: Report- no pics

I remember tracking a couple of Timbers early in the morning in late October and finding them covered in frost!  They don't stay up long after that...and I'm looking out my window this morning and there is a pretty heavy frost.   sad

On the atrox, remember "rattlesnakeman" finding some last year early in the spring?

I think it's likely their peak emergence beats the Timbers by a couple of weeks.  If the weather is "perfect", I don't see why we shouldn't be out looking as early as the end of March.

Re: Report- no pics

Wasn't he also down in the Ouachitas somewhere?  Might be a tad warmer there...

Re: Report- no pics

Nope...
he says 'near AR/OK border' and I know he's from Benton county...
If they were benton county, that'd be a good county record.
I asked him to let us tag along sometime, and he replied 'a good fisherman never takes other fisherman to his best fishing hole'

I say we drive up there and rough him up till he takes us.

I dont see him post much, may not even check the site.
I think Beaupre has talked to him before. But thats ok, we wont let him come to our natural dam site when we find 20 more!

Re: Report- no pics

I know he's in benton county, but I'm pretty sure his website says that he is in the Kiamichis somewhere in the ouachitas.

The older i get, the mind starts going...
You are correct, this guy is in the ouachitas.  GAME ON
Lets go find his spot!  BAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!

Maybe we wont have to go this far south, keep your fingers crossed.

Re: Report- no pics

He goes as far as to say that:"In the past four or five years, I've found a lot of people who say there are western diamondbacks in this area, but I just assumed they didn't know what they were looking at. I might have to start believing them about Bigfoot now too." This was in a paper last year. You guys need to prove him even more wrong than you already have.

Re: Report- no pics

I'll first say that I do not know the *exact* spot where "rattlesnakeman" has turned up these atrox, but I think a little deductive reasoning could get one pretty close (or at least narrow down the choices).

* I'm pretty sure it's on private land.
* I think there is a road that gets pretty close to the "hot spot"...but, again, I'm pretty sure this would be a private road.
* It's ON the AR/OK border.  My impression is that it's so close, it's difficult to know for sure which side one is actually on.
* It's almost certainly a fairly large, steep, rocky SW-facing slope.
* It's probably within a couple of hours drive from Bentonville (where he lives).
* And the terrain looks like this:

Re: Report- no pics

Now that this is the DB thread.

Kory are you speaking of a site NW Arkansas, or are you talking about his site near Mena? He does sate that he has found them in the Kiamichis near Mena in the article on his website. Maybe I miss took his Bigfoot statement? Does his statement mean that he does believe that they are in NWA?

His "spot" is not in NW Arkansas; of that I'm sure.  He drives south, so it has to be down there somewhere.  Which to me makes some of the more northly reports (i.e. Natural Dam, etc.) more tantilizing.
