Topic: breakin the law?

Breakin thelaw, Breakin thelaw, neeh neeh! (remember the judas priest song, glen?)

So, yesterday me and jeremy went out and did some habitat enhancement. Placing artificial cover (A/C) all over creation, but for the sake of conversation, we'll just say we placed it on all private land. Some folks might call it dumping.  We ran into my dad (as we were stealing some tin from his junk pile) and he went off on how he was gonna laugh when we got a ticket, and it got me to thinking- I guess that'd be viewed as dumping if you got caught, wouldnt it?  Maybe james keith whalen can shed some light on this... ?  Has anyone on here ever placed tin/boards specifically for herping?  Hopefully, this will increase our cold blooded finds this spring..we shall see.  We are both newbies to this, so it'll be trial and error for sure.  We kept gps coordinates for all our sites, so we can always (and probably will) pull it all up and move it depending on results. Anyway, Just curious on any experiences placing A/C.

I thought for sure we'd turn up one of the yearly firsts but we were skunked.  Hey, how bout that, "first day to be skunked herping in '07"
We have a winner!

Re: breakin the law?

I do not know if you are breaking the law, when you have permission on private lands. I would guess it would be illegal on public lands.

I have been wondering, what are your target species with the tin? I guess I
keep thinking WDB stuff.  hmm One tract mind.

Roger that on the WDB...although we've had such little experience with them, not sure if it will matter though.  We tried to pick spots that are at least west/southwest facing...with open canopy...tried to keep the A/C in the 'transitional' habitat, on the border of the clearing/edge of the woods.   We did not drag any off near what i would call 'wdb habitat'...but who knows...We also used both tin and wood.  Ah hell, who am i kidding, if we find one ringneck due to our efforts, i will consider it a raving success!

keep in mind glenn...me and hulk are at a desk in a cubicle all day, not out there on the threshold of scientific discovery and research like you and van. It does not take much to amuze us.

Re: breakin the law?

Awesome!  Hopefully you'll strike a diamond mine with that tin.

As long as the tin is on private property, its fine.  Public property would technically be considered illegal dumping- though with all the "real" dumping going on in the Ozarks, I doubt anyone would notice.  I've spread tin around at existing sites, but always have been too lazy to go out and place my own at new sites.

I don't know if you would need to place tin in specific WDB habitat to find a WDB.  I bet if you had put tin somewhere on the fields above Xena's hill o' death, you would have gotten her eventually with all the time she seemed to spend up there.

Re: breakin the law?

I did spread some tin, that I will go back and visit this spring, last fall. It was the spot I took the AHS group to to get the county record cave salie. The tin did yield one million ringnecks (or maybe a few less), one copperhead, one rough earth snake, and a couple of slimy salies. I guess the reason I ask, we have not had much success with shooting for a particular species besides ringnecks, copperheads, and western rats.

I am easily amused, as well. Do not think all of research types are that advanced. My greatest amusement is watching Van fall. Poor Van

Re: breakin the law?

I have tin in 4 counties now(and more to come). Most is on private land with permission from the landowner. Some is on private land without, however, this is mostly on large tracts of land owned by companies, not private parties. I dont worry too much about getting a ticket. After a season of growth you'll have to have a gps to find it so most people will never even see it after the initial placement.

Re: breakin the law?

The week after the fall trip, I returned the marked queen snakes and made a stop near that old home where there was tin layed about (near where you caught the cave sallie). I found a lot of ringneck snakes under the tin; I'm guessing maybe neonates because they were very small. I also saw one small ribbon snake.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that now.

Re: breakin the law?

Every peice of tin not used for my pop's homing pigeons, i place in local woods. It is in either my aunt's land or our deer camp we belong to. It really does depend on public or private. However if you let them know its for scientific reasons, Im sure there would be some leeway.

If not we will unleash all the poisonous snakes that bite onto their tails and form hoops to chase innocent children down, on the towns and cities until we are able to place tin whereever we please....

Thanks for sharing, the ribbon is a new one to me in the area. Cool. I hope you got a picture or collected the animal, it is a county record.

Re: breakin the law?

I guess I should have said ribbon or garter snake. It was so small (smallest one I've seen regardless of which species it was) and I didn't catch it. It disappeared before I could grab it.

isnt it funny..... land owners have a fit when you dump on their property... Herpers have a fit when you clean it up!
