Topic: Spotted Salamander Migration in NW Arkansas

I hope some others made it out tonight, too.  I was sooo tired after a long meeting after school (and a long week ahead), I almost bailed on going out at all.  When the rain picked up about 7:30PM, I pretty much forced myself to go.  I'm glad I did.  I thought the conditions and timing would be just about right and they were...after 9PM.

Only a couple of DORs, many more AORs, and a road-side drainage ditch with plenty of breeding action from about a dozen individuals.

Spotted Salamanders 20+
Spring Peepers 5+
Ozark Zig-zag Salamanders 4

Pictures may be forthcoming.  I wasn't liking the cold rain OR my equipment tonight, so who knows?  I'll see what I got tomorrow.

I figured they would go tonight- woods might have also down in the NF.  Glad you saw them Kory!  I would have given my bum right ankle to be out there tonight.

Re: Spotted Salamander Migration in NW Arkansas

Well, I wimped out in the end. Without my partner in crime, and the fact that I have about killed my offroad Neon. I was thinking more about the woods in the ONF, and not going out to the same spotted breeding ponds for the 7th straight year.
Maybe I will go check the ditch Van and I found a smallmouth last year.

Next up crawfish frogs.

I was thinking along those lines, too.   cool  Let's keep an eye out for the next warmish heavy rain and see what we can find.

Oh, one more little tidbit to this story...  After I had pulled over to the side of the road and was checking a shallow pool at the edge of a lake near my house, another truck pulls in.  It's the Bella Vista Parks and Recreation "police"!!!  HA!  I thought I was going to be hassled pretty hard.  Turns out the guy was super-nice.  Chance would have it the pool had ONE spotted sallie so I was able to show him what I was doing out at 10PM in the rain.  He was pretty blown away.  In fact, I handed him a card before we parted ways and he talked like a program on snakes might be requested for their group.  Could be a win-win.  Personally, I'd like a little more "flexibility" in where I survey for herps in Bella Vista, and this would be a good "in" along with some inside knowledge on habitats.  Might save a snake or two, too, since I'm sure there is a lot of unwarranted killing going on around the golf courses and so forth....I'm afraid to know!  hmm

As expected, my pics weren't crazy good...just marginally acceptable:

And a couple of other amphibs:

Do not be too hard your self. The peeper pics are very good.

You anger me greatly with this post. Not anger at you, but myself for not going out. It looks like more rain in the forcast, and the general ecology class will go out and check egg masses and adults next week. I guess I will have to live with that, because I think the woodies may be done. sad  I need my motivation back. Heal faster, VAN.

Aslo my new avitar sucks. Can any of you see the very large (almost 6 foot) western coachwhip?

Thanks.  I've become very critical of my own pictures.   sad  Taking pictures of little wet amphibians at night creates all kinds of problems.  Either you get ugly, harsh shadows; bad flashback from the water (as in these pictures); or some combination of both.  The macro flashhead I was using is great for some things, but is too straight-on for wet conditions.  Ah well...I need another regular flashhead instead.  Just what I need: more gear.   hmm  I was also trying a new sharpening technique and probably overdid that a tad, too.  ...but other than those 5-10 things, they're great!  HA!

I collected a single spotted sallie, so I'll have a chance soon to get some additional pictures under my own terms.  (In case anyone is wondering, it wasn't collected *just* for pics; I'll be using it for educational programs, too.  ...and, if I'm not mistaken, it's a young male...so less impact.  ...and I "saved it" from the highway.)

I dunno.  I seriously doubt the spotteds are done.  The first place I checked was my little "Peeper Pond" and I didn't see any...and they bred there in good numbers last year.  I wouldn't know so much about the others, but I'll be keeping an eye on the weather.  Primarily, I'm interested in Crawfish Frogs this year, but if rain moves through on a weekend I could be persuaded to visit Wood Frog ponds.  Keep me on your call list.   smile

Ehhh...I'm not seeing the Coachwhip.  I was thinking something along the lines of "I definitely shouldn't have drank that last pitcher of beer last night before herping the next day!"   cool

I guess people can fuss over the size limitations I have in place for the avatars if they want.  (Not that it will do any good.  Mwahahaha...haha..ha..hmmm...  J/K)

No drinky drinky when out doing ones research, but one can stop to enjoy the other animals. Thought maybe some with the big screen computers could still see the snake, but I will have to come up with a new avitar. I have no problem with the size of the avitar, some pictures are just not good enough for aviatar status.

Even without rains, the peepers were calling in full force just after dusk last night.  By the time I made it to "Peeper Pond", they had just about quit calling, but I did see a few; plus about 8 or 10 spotted sallies.  The season is definitely upon us!

Re: Spotted Salamander Migration in NW Arkansas

Something here is reminding me of Rear Window...   hmm  Van will probably note some fantastic herping phenomenon from his windowed perch and put us all to shame this season!   roll

Nothing of significance, but I did swing by the lake close to my house after school today and spotted an unknown turtle (though likely Red-eared Slider).

Last year, I documented the date and county of each new species I came across for the year.  This didn't seem to be too much burden and was pretty easy using the [url=http://www.herpsofarkansas.com/Main/DownloadsPDF species lists[/url].  Hopefully some others will do the same this year so we can compare notes.   big_smile

Same here, but due to other engagements I was unable to slip out and see if I could find a few. If I get home earlier tonight, and if my legs will let me, I'm gonna hop the fence and cruise around the spring behind the house.
