Starting to go off-topic now, I guess, but I've just upped the size limitations anyway for good measure.  Max dimensions are now 138px x 138px and 150kb.

I just tried to upload my avitar and it still says that it has to be between 0-18 K

Looks like I got a little mixed up on the setting with "kiloBITS" and "kiloBYTES"...  Now it's set to 15KB max, which should be plenty.  I just resized my Grotto Sallie pic down to avatar size and it was less than 4KB.  Make sure to strip any metadata (i.e. EXIF and ITPC) to further reduce the size.

Ok..... I have some of the best graphics software out there and I havent been able to find out where to strip the metadata from the pic.  I currently have the pic at 138pixels x 107pixels and 44k in size.

Which program are you using and how do I take this info out of the pic?

I currently have PhotoShop 6 and PhotoImpact 7 installed.

Run your picture through "Save for web..." and you should have it.  Or, in a pinch, try this for a quick solution:
