Topic: I thought they had left

I decided to tag along with the General Ecology class last night. We were going out to observe the reproductive efforts of Spotted Salamanders. Since I had been out in Franklin County and had seen plenty of egg masses and no adults, I figured this is what we would see yesterday. To my surprise we netted around a dozen post reproductive adults out of the pond.

I will not lie I found this one under a log.

We also netted plenty of Bullfrog tadpoles and Newts.

Of course we found some frogs. We saw at least three strings of American Toad eggs (kind of a surprise this early), one little bitty Cricket Frog, and of course Spring Peepers were calling like mad. This is Dr. Doug James showing some students a male peeper. If you do not Doug he is a bird guy, but he is one heck of a naturalist. Naturalist rarely exist these days, especially in the academic realm.
