Topic: Lake Atalanta Herp finds

Yesterday after the sun poked thru the clouds, my daughter and I went to Lake Atalanta here in Rogers just to hike, and see what there might be to see.

The people fishing near this little guy were really upset about him poking up out of the hole where they were fishing. When we walked by, they called us over since we had our snake hooks.  They swore up and down it was a HUGE Cottonmouth.. lol
We sat and waited and waited for a long time for the snake, and it looked like it left, so we walked off. We made it all the way to the bridge when the lady came screaming at us the snake was back, so we went back over, and I  got right up on it before it hid in the hole again..! I swear the snake was under the water laughing.   All we got was a picture of its nose.
The people threatened to kill the snake if it popped back up, and since it wouldn't pop up when we were there, and we had to go..I just laid a rock over the hole, so it would have to go further down the bank to come out, and hopefully they wouldn't hurt it.  hmm  I guess moving to the other side of the bank would have been too much to expect?

Nice finds Courtney.

I am sitting hear trying to key out all your turtles. Looks like to me you found a number of River Cooters, at least one Common Map, and I would guess a Spiny Soft Shell. Anyone else want to second these?

Re: Lake Atalanta Herp finds

This reminds me that I need to go back there myself.  Lake Atlanta has a very good diversity of aquatic turtles and they aren't quite as skittish with all of the people around.  I've found a surprisingly good number and diversity of other herps there as well, including snakes (even with the lack of respect they receive!).
