Topic: Southwest Arkansas Spring Break Herpin'

As others had to report back to work after our Kisatchie National Forest trip, I camped and herped my way back north, spending most of my time in southwest Arkansas.  I didn't really have a script; just decided things as I went along.  In the end, I didn't really see too many herps that I couldn't have also found in northwest Arkansas, but I did have a few highlights...none of which I would consider spectacular.

Spectacular NON-finds
* No Coralsnake  sad
* No Lined Snake  sad  (...but I have an idea now about where one might turn up in AR.)
* No W. Diamondback Rattlesnake  sad  (...kind of missed my "window" of opportunity with the weather and time; only had about 2 hours to look at a suspected location.)
* No Fourche Mountain Salamander  sad  (...my own fault; I wanted to look for them, but drove through the location too late in the day to bother looking and I didn't want to backtrack so far.)

Great Finds
* American Alligator  (Yes, I know it's no big deal for some of you, but finally seeing my own in AR was a big deal to me.)
* Three new county records. (Mud Turtle, Eastern Hognose Snake, and Copperhead)
* Gulf Crayfish Snake (Rare species.)

Good Finds
* Western Worm Snake (Rare species for area - Hempstead Co.)
* "Leadback" variety of Southern Redback Salamander
* Found all three kingsnakes (Speckled, Prairie, and Milksnake) on the same day.
* Found a "Moccasin crossing" where I noted 2 Cottonmouth and 3 Copperheads crossing the road in about the span of two headlight lengths.
* Visited a couple of places where AHS may want to hold field trips in the future.

Near Misses
* Two would-have-been county records. (Upland Chorus Frog and Common Musk Turtle)

Bad Finds
* Poison ivy! (Probably from LA; luckily the blisters stayed pretty much on one hand/wrist and didn't hamper me too bad.)
* Clear cutting! (I thought the urbanization of northwest Arkansas was bad, but now I think it pales in comparison to the damage being done in southern Arkansas.  I spent a good bit of time in Miller County and found pretty much nothing in the way herps; the whole area it seems has been logged to oblivion.)

Re: Southwest Arkansas Spring Break Herpin'

DANG! I didn't know you guys were this close! Hempstead?!?! Thats my county! Hope is my town! Man...I need to keep in contact more!!!

Oh and I belive it was Tuesday I spotted a very large worm snake...around 10 in. near the pigeon enclosures behind my house. It darted under some brush...after 45 mins of scraped hands and boocoos of poison ivy all over my limbs....I gave up...I swear once those guys get near dirt or cover...they ARE GONE!!!!

Glad y'all had a nice trip!

By "you guys", I guess you mean just little 'ol me.  Like I said, after the Louisiana portion there was no script and I was on my own.  I remembered you being in Hope as I traveled through, but short of going door-to-door...?  HA!

I think Grandview Prairie may be worthy of consideration for a future AHS field trip.  In fact, Kelly has mentioned this before...his concern--which I concur with--is that herping open prairie can be tough.  There are, however, a couple of small lakes and ponds that seem chock full of turtles (probably all red-eared sliders!).  The surrounding back roads contain copious amounts of illegal dumping and tin piles.  With some phone calls, we could probably have all of the flipping we could stand (if not on the prairie proper).  Also, we could extend to the Hope Upland WMA and the RR tracks that run by it.  The nearest campsite with showers is probably Millwood State Park...which could serve as another field trip all to itself.  Anyway, there are possibilities in that area for sure.

Nice finds, Kory!

Prairie herping becomes infinitely easier when there's flippable cover (tin/rocks) around- this would be the perfect time of year for it too if you wanted to hit an area like that.

Grandview is great! But like you said it would be hit or miss...only rocks and logs here and there. But I also bet there could be some success in the tin sites, because people around here dump all they have, but they surely wont mind us.

HEY! Maybe a coral snake could materialize this time. I personaly havent encountered one here in Hope, but  according to range maps there is a good chance of a hit.

Oh and Me and Dad hit Milwood on Friday. We were virtually unsuccessful. though its still a bit early, I thought we would find something...but nothing of note...a few spring peepers, some geese, and a few turtles...I may post a few pics in a thread. I will probably go back in a month or so and see if I have any luck.

(btw, the big draw to Milwood and the reason me and Pops went is because of the rampant gator population....but Friday, no luck!)

Great finds. You did better by yourself then with us in Louisiana.  big_smile

Are there reports of ornata at Grandview? Looks like you can add another county record to your lists. Looks like one of the sets of larvae is opacum.

Well...4 days versus 2.  I didn't think I did anything too wonderful.  Most of my finds were relatively common species.  I guess it takes a little more to thrill me than it used to.

THAT was exactly my question as I surveyed the area.  Not even considered *potential* for the entire county!  I wonder what the rangers at Grandview would say?  ...which started me thinking about ANHC's box turtle survey, too.  I've got to get my dog trained on box turtles!

Just need to put Holly to work. By the way not the species you foundk, but just the numbers.
