Topic: Road Cruising

I went out cruising a couple of days back on some back roads I had tons of luck with last year and all I saw was a DOR 1 1/2 foot cottonmouth. Was pretty disapointed but enjoyed the ride anyway.

Too bad the Cottonmouth was DOR. Probably just a little early to be roadcruisin. Waiting for those hot days, of course this weekend is the exact opposite of what we want, Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Re: Road Cruising

I have a great spot to find pigmy rattlers crossing a country road.  My best luck has been in the early spring and in the fall during daylight hours.  At night in the summer time, it seems to have only copperheads and an occasional (rare) timber rattlesnake.  Have never seen a spot like this for pigmies though.  And for those of you who want to know where it is, it is outside the city limits north of I40 and east of I540.

Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.

rattlesnakeman is absolutely correct. I guess I just assumed that when you said road cruising it meant at night. Was this the case? My statement only applies to cruising at night. Of course this time of year you can catch animals trying to get to the sun not away. It is all about maintaining that optimal temperature for the species that one is cruising for.

It was a couple of hours after sun-rise when I got started. But last year, it seemed like the entire spring and summer from sun-up to after the sun went down there were turtles and snakes crossing these backroads every 5 minutes. Last year I caught a speckled king, 2 huge black rats, 2 eastern hognoses, 2 copperheads, 4 cottonmouths and countless turtles (red-ear sliders, cooters, common snappers, box turtles, musk turtles) all with-in a week and half
