Topic: New pics. snake, tarantula, misc

I pulled of a backroad to get some soil for a fern I just got and came across a hotspot for all kinds of animals. The first stone I turned had a female tarantula under it. I found some bark scorpions, assorted lizards, a toad, and several brown snakes all in about 20 minutes. With the piles of debris, cactus, and piles of rocks I'm sure on a warmer day with some more thorough poking around I'll find some more serious critters to dig up. Hope these turn out!

Looks like you found your scorpion, congrats. Just a little curious, what county were you in? Not trying to get your site, but when I see a racerunner picture I am very curious.

I've noted that scorpions, taratulas, black widows, and milksnakes all seem to like the same microhabitats in Arkansas.

Kory you keep jinxing me with that statement.  Every time I find a bunch of scorpions and tarantulas I start getting excited for milks that never materialize.  Its killing me.

Sorry.   sad  Rocks typically have to be catching some sun to find milks...and I usually find them in shed cycles, so there is a seasonal component.

I found the same milk snake three times, in 30 days, under the same rock one summer in Bella Vista.  That was 20 years ago.  Wow, that makes me feel really old.

It's actually in pulaski county near the Airbase. It's kind of in a restricted area and you have be be capable of getting on base to get to it, otherwise I would be more than happy to share where it is if anyone wanted to take a look for themselves. It was somewhat by mistake I found the spot but I haven't explored the rest of the area yet. But out of the 8 rocks I turned over, only one of them was vacant of anything work looking at. Alot of wood and brush piles, with rocks and open area. I'm sure there are some larger snakes in the area seeing's out the food supply is plenty. I did end up keeping the tarantula and she actually dug a burrow in a large pot I have with a yucca plant growing out of it. I am going back later this week to look around when it warms up so I'll try to post some more coherent pics. I just got the camera and haven't mastered the macro feature on it.
