Topic: horridus gone

I have been looking........and looking for a "spot" to find timber's closer to home in Marion co.
Have had no luck.
So......I went to a place in newton co. where I have found timber's every year, its seems I have no luck getting pics of timbers anywhere else. This place NEVER lets me down! But as i came over the ridge to my horror the entire slope and everything else in the area had been logged recently and not a timber to be found.
I was useless and sick for the rest of the weekend. I could not even bring myself to stop and get some pics of a hognose I saw on the side of the road.
I know logging is important to the economy blah blah blah! But it seems every year its a little harder, for me anyway, to find timbers.(and others) And to my eyes the #1 cause is habitat destruction!
Ok im finished with my rant sad  just had to share it with all of you

All I can say is, it is sad. I just pray that things hang on in little pockets or find a way to adapt to the new environment man is creating.

There are some good Horridus spots left here around Flippin. If it ever warms up we'll go check 'em out.

Re: horridus gone

Oh how depressing! That's a real let down, I know.

I had a nice herp spot that last year I didn't get to herp in much, but I made the stupid mistake of telling a couple of people about it and they've since destroyed it, leaving trash around, 4wheeling through the fields, flipping all the tin, rocks and logs, and not replacing it, the pond is quite obviously been uprooted. Lots of frogs gone, I'm sure they were collected as feeders..I am thinking anything I had a chance of finding is gone now.
Makes me sick...it literally looks like a war zone now.

I'm about to have an abruptly.

Re: horridus gone

I know how that is I took a "friend" of mine to my timber spot and a couple of weeks later a was at his house and he had 3 timbers in cages. I can see maybe if you want one as a pet, but to me I get just as much enjoyment going back to a den year after year and being able to identify the same snakes.

Re: horridus gone

Yeah if I find a good population, I might take one home, maybe 2 at the MOST..But it sickens me to hear stories of people who collect all they can to toss them all in a tank together.
I've seen THAT done as well.

I'm about to have an abruptly.

Re: horridus gone

I discovered years ago that you can not tell people where you find snakes.  Everyone you tell wants to tell at least "one" other person.  Before long many people know and the site is gone, and when it is gone, it is gone FOREVER.  Some will collect snakes as "pets" and have no idea how to take care of them and the snakes die.  Others want to impress someone with the great place that "they" found, and someone will always want just one skin. Every year there is a picture in the paper showing some guy with a huge smile holding a dead rattlesnake, how brave.  Have been critizied in the past for not sharing information about locations.  Please believe me though, I will not share any information on snake dens unless I'm certain you will treat that information as I do and not share it with anyone.  In WWII they had a saying, "loose lips sink ships", that saying is still correct today.  Rattlesnakes in the wild are getting harder to find all the time, most people like that.  I'm not one of them.

Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.

Re: horridus gone

I can understand that, I only share my locations with a couple of people that I have seen in the field as responsible, and this takes some of the fun out of it for me, as I get alot of enjoyment out of sharing my meager knowledge, and experiances.

As much as I would love to know your spot, i do greatly respect your stance.
