Topic: Amphiumas anyone?

I was curious if anyone else out there was having any luck with finding Amphiuma.  I've found one spot where I'm sure the poulation is absolutely HUGE as in some isolated areas when conditions are good I've seen as many as 9 in a night.  I've found that it is best when the dithces seem to be rather oxygen deprived and you can spot them when they surface for air.  I probably see 4-5x as many when conditions are like this (as opposed to only seeing 1 or 2 a night otherwise).

They seem to be an animal that everyone sees one here, one there of etc, but nobody has ever really spent anytime studying them (or at least in this part of their range, if memory serves me correctly there were a few that worked on them in Tennessee years ago).

Re: Amphiumas anyone?

I think that they are much more common than people think. We caught a few in Jacob's traps up north last year, and Jacob has found them in the ditches here in town. Even though we haven't seen them in the mass quantities you have at your site, I think that they are quite abundant around here. With little effort, I bet we could make a trip around the area (on a good night) and catch as many as we want.
