Topic: DOR Bullsnake in Northwest Arkansas

Found this guy dor on Friday, June 8, 2007.  Had been run over quite a few times, but I believe it is a bullsnake.

It's a western ratsnake (black ratsnake, chicken snake, etc).

Kory also told me the same thing.  Guess I have never seen one with such markings and it was not in good shape.  A little humility is good for the soul.  mea culpa.

I wouldn't have guessed black rat either..
At what age do they generally develop the darker colorations and lose their patterns?

I'm about to have an abruptly.

Re: DOR Bullsnake in Northwest Arkansas

It varies between individuals.  Most I've seen are pretty dark by about 2.5 feet in length.  However, some maintain pattern well into the 5-6 feet.  Also, the interstitial skin is often white/red, so any spreading of the scales reveals an underlying pattern (which may have occurred when this guy was flattened).

I would not have guessed rat - but in my oklahoma experience, bull snakes that length would have a girth of about 10-11 inches. Hard to tell with this flat guy.

Thanks Van!
I've seen some 4-5ft black rats with the pitch black back and the stomach checkerboard, not hard to ID in that scenario. lol

This snake was between 4-5 feet.
