Topic: Waste of a night
Thought I would waste away my evening yesterday. After the rains, heat, and high humidity, I thought a road cruise would be in order. After Downing some world famous SJB/MF hot wings and some adult beverage, I decided to head out for a little drive. I headed south. I should of watched the radar a little closer, because the rains were not that significant to the south. As I drove many of the roads there was a nice trail of red dust. On the way down, I did spot a large DOR Western Rat Snake. It was on a major road and had been hit a good number of times.
Off on a dirt road I did get my one and only snake. This much smaller Western Rat Snake. It looks like it could use a nice meal.

After two plus hours of road cruising and no luck, I opted to hit a water hole that is known for Cottonmouth. No luck on that front as well. There were many Cricket Frogs and Gray Treefrogs calling. There was a third Anuran species calling, but I am not a 100% on my ID. It looks to me like a Woodhouse's Toad (not an American Toad).

I did find DIW snake. Again, I am not 100% on my ID, since it is missing some parts. I think this is a Midland Water Snake. It appears that it was persecuted as a Cottonmouth (no head). The crayfish and fish had eaten a good part away.

Just a note, I think it is too early in the year to be doing much road cruising in NWA. It needs to get warmer.
