Topic: A day with Van

Before I make like a fetus and head out, I thought I would see how the strange folks down the hall do a big part of their research. Van was kind enough to take me out tracking for Timber Rattlesnakes. I guess this is kind of cheating, since they all have radio transmitters. So off to the study site to flip some rocks on a glade and track 6 Timbers. cool

So first let us play the little game that some of you like so very much. That game would be find the snake, good luck.

I did not take pictures of all six Timbers, but this is the first one. We walked right past this male. So I yelled at Van. He made some excuse about this one has an odd transmitter, but I still think he was trying to get me bit. I know better and have heard plenty of stories. People who think that Timbers attack are well you can insert your thought. The picture sucks, because my lens thought it would be a good time to fog over.

I did not pictures Timbers 2-4 (4 was under a rock), but this is number five.

Last is the sixth Timber.

This is good ole Van at work. In the second picture you can clearly see the Timber (of course this is a different Timber than the picture at the top tongue )

We did not have the best of luck on the glade. Heck, the main reason I came was the hopes of finding a Pigmy. No suck luck, just a Ringneck and Worm Snakes, three sheds, and some lizard eggs. I will admit to finding the lizard eggs very very cool. The first clutch is more than likely a Fence Lizard (but could be a skink or Prairie Racerunner). The second clutch is very obvious who it belongs to.

Another fun day in the field.

Re: A day with Van

My old eyes can't find it in the first picture.  Pictures like that make me NOT want to go out in the woods herping...I'll step right on a big ole rattler...ekkkk.

Yes, I can see the head of a Timber Rattlesnake.

Jen, it is a little scary when you look back at these pics and the ones of the Copperheads posted previously by bobbyneal. Keep in mind that both Van and I walked over the first one, and we were tracking it. Just do not walk around barefoot.

I will post an answer down the road.

Well, using Van's eyes as a guide I think I see the head between the spider web and the big stick in the lower left quarter of the picture.  The snake is facing to the right.

Don't worry Jen, if you were about to step on it the snake would probably rattle............ well maybe...................hopefully.  Otherwise, you would walk right by it like the guys with the fancy tracking equipment so often do. wink

If I remember from the snake folks, they rarely rattle. Not a singe one of these six snakes rattled once. Even the one on the crawl.
