Topic: Ecology Camp 2007 - Herps Report

For what it's worth, I've posted herp pictures from ecology camp.  Check the recent updates for those (with a few more to be added soon).  Nothing too unusual or interesting turned up, but it was a good escape for a couple of weeks.

I did run a couple of hoop-style turtle traps for basically the second attempt.  Using sardines as bait this time, we captured maybe 8-10 common snappers, 2 red-eared sliders, and a common musk.

A few funnel traps captured 2-3 frogs (green, narrowmouth, and ?), a racer, a woodland vole, and a variety of insects.

Pretty much off the top of my head, this is a list of herps found in and around camp:

Southern Copperhead
Western Cottonmouth
Southern Black Racer
Rough Green Snake (Reported by students, but not seen personally)
Western Rat Snake (2 juveniles)
Yellowbelly Water Snake
Eastern Hognose Snake
-----
Eastern Fence Lizard
Five-Lined Skink (or possibly female Broadhead)
Prairie Racerunner
-----
Common Snapping Turtle
Eastern River Cooter
Three-toed Box Turtle
Red-eared Slider
Common Musk Turtle
-----
Fowler's Toad
Northern Cricket Frog
Cope's Gray Treefrog (based on calls)
Green Treefrog (calls only)
Eastern Narrowmouth Toad
Bullfrog
Green Frog
-----
Spotted Salamander
Ouachita Dusky Salamander
Many-ribbed Salamander
Western Slimy Salamander
Central Newt

Not so much.  As a matter of fact, some things I'd become quite accustomed to seeing in abundance were downright sparse.  Used to be the leaf litter between the cabins was alive with skinks and fence lizards, but those were basically nonexistent.  Camp ran a week later than usual, so that might have had some effect.

Wow....I wish I had known about that camp before. My 12 yr old step-son would have loved it.  Oh well..maybe next year my step-daughter can go..she'll be 11.  I bookmarked the site.  smile
