Topic: Chat chat chat

As I see that a good number of us are on the form at one time, a thought came to me. Would it be worthwhile to have a chat section to the website? Would any of us use it? I guess the question to the web folks (Kory and Torry) is it possible in this code and is there any bandwidth issues? Just a thought, do not know if it is even a good thought.

Re: Chat chat chat

*cough *... you know... I brought this idea up to kory not too long ago... it was put on the "to ask about later" list... cause he didnt think it would be utilized much after the new wore off.. I tend to agree.. but I'd like to  HAVE the feature in the event we ever do want to have some chats. They can be added, yep... pretty nice little program right to the forum actually...

Why dont we just start a poll here...since we're talkin about it anyway...

Re: Chat chat chat

I'd be interested.  It does seem that a number of us have similar times to visit.  Besides, even if it doesn't get constant use we could coordinate a time to chat every now and then on a particular topic or just because we feel like it.

Of course, this is all coming from the guy who hadn't signed in for about a week because of being so incredibly busy with the whole college professor thing!  tongue

I wonder how many more of our lurkers would come out of the woodwork with a chat function though.. the ones that dont really have anything to post but might like to just shoot the breeze.. Hmm. could be a devils playground too though.

Re: Chat chat chat

Thought my idea was kind of retarded, but I guess not.

I am now scared.  yikes

It would be nice if Brad had a computer at home, then maybe he would chat. If he got caught by the boss, messing around in a chat room, I think he may get in a little trouble.

Re: Chat chat chat

Another forum I belong to has what is called a shoutbox. It sits right above the forum topics and refreshes about every 15 seconds. Long enough to say hi, short enough to keep it brief. I thought that was a nifty feature

Re: Chat chat chat

We probably will not upgrade again until the final release of the software we are using. It started as beta and went thru up to beta5 I think-- then they made it a release "candidate". Each time they update, we upgrade and sometimes there are conflicts. Kory has decided to hold off on any major style/feature additions until the final "gold" release is announced. That way we get full support and all the kinks are worked out. The Chat, can be added at that point. When? Hard to say but the bug report for the current version is getting smaller and smaller. When there are no more bugs to fix, they'll settle and release.

What she said.   tongue

Without going into specifics, I have some concerns about a chat feature...in how one might be plugged into the site appropriately, how it might be used, and how it might be abused.  I think those concerns can be resolved, but I'm not fretting over it now.  When the forum program goes "gold", we'll revisit and at that time I may return for some specific input from members.
