Topic: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

With the 2010 herping season now underway, I was just curious what people had for wish lists and target species.  I'll start by listing the remaining species I have yet to find in AR, which will be a basis for targeting for the next couple of years.

* = Primary target for 2010.

01 Rocky Mountain Toad (Anaxyrus woodhousii woodhousii)
...Could be tough to find a "pure" specimen in AR.

02 Western Narrow-mouthed Toad (Gastrophryne olivacea) *
...Might have to sneak over into OK for a "close enough" specimen.

03 Eastern Spadefoot (Scaphiopus holbrookii)
...Not sure on this one; might have to take a shot at it some spring break if it rains hard...probably not this year.

04 Marbled Salamander (Ambystoma opacum)
...Yes, for all the people that seem to turn these up, I have yet to claim my own.

05 Ozark Hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis bishopi) *
...Have an "in" for these; plan to knock it off the list this summer.

06 Red River Mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus louisianensis) *
...Pretty much know where and how to find these, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

07 Western Lesser Siren (Siren intermedia nettingi)
...Know some people who would probably help me find these, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

08 Texas Coralsnake (Micrurus tener tener) *
...Will continue to try for these tricky little buggers until successful.

09 Slowinski's Cornsnake (Pantherophis slowinskii)
...Just talked to Kelly about these recently.  Apparently there aren't any specimens for AR, so it probably deserves "hypothetical status" anyway.

10 Variable Groundsnake (Sonora semiannulata semiannulata) *
...Know the spots for these; should make an attempt or two for them this spring.

11 Mississippi Green Watersnake (Nerodia cyclopion)
...Know some people who could help me with these, they're just far away and trickier to find.

12 Graham's Crayfish Snake (Regina grahamii)
...Don't really have many leads on turning up one of these.

13 Western Slender Glass Lizard (Ophisaurus attenuatus attenuatus)
...Know a spot or two where these have been found, just haven't had success with them yet.

14 Great Plains Skink (Plestiodon obsoletus) *
...Same as 02.

15 Southern Prairie Skink (Plestiodon septentrionalis obtusirostris) *
...Same as 02.

16 Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) *
...Might join in for some turtle trapping this summer for these?

17 Western Chicken Turtle (Deirochelys reticularia miaria)
...Don't really have much for leads on these.

18 Ornate Box Turtle (Terrapene ornata ornata)
...Same as 02, though I'd really like to turn one up in AR.

19 Razor-backed Musk Turtle (Sternotherus carinatus)
...Have a spot for these, just have to make the time for them.

20 Midland Smooth Softshell (Apalone mutica mutica)
...Don't have a motorboat and these are on bigger rivers.

If I'm not working on this list, I'll be spending the spring (at least) in search of Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnakes.  I also have a longer list of species I'd like to get better photographs.  So, I'll have more than enough to keep me busy!

I figure if I can knock off WDR, get at least 3-4 from my list above, and get improved photographs for a few others...it will be a successful year.  If I can ever get my Coralsnake, I've got to try for all the venomous in AR in a single year.  I think that would be cool.

Re: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

I can help you with the Gastrophryne olivacea. I have them all over at my house.

Kory, I am placing the coral snake as the #1 herp to find on my list.  Brad and I were talking about this tonight. We MUST make a trip south.  big_smile

Re: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

In no particular order:

Western mud snake (Farancia abacura)
Kansas glossy snake (Arizona elegans)
Western massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus)
Texas night snake (Hypsiglena torquata)

Three-toed amphiuma (Amphiuma tridactylum)
Kiamichi slimy salamander (Plethodon kiamichi)
Rich mountain salamander (Plethodon ouachitae)

Eh...anything is fair game!  big_smile  I really just want these to photograph for my website. I still need more than just these though. These are just what I have been having a hard time finding.

Re: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

So you helped me remember that I made a wish list last winter. Here it is:

*= Target this year, #= should be able to pick up some day just working SE AR, $=slim chance in AR.

Three-Toed Amphiuma
$ Spotted Dusky Salamander (big ? on this one, I may have seen it, may have not, may be impossible to find)
*Four-toed Salamander
$Sequoyah Slimy Salamander (Big ? on this species too, since it is only known from one occurrence and may be be a real sp.)
Western Lesser Siren (I did see the one at the North Crowley's Ridge trip but I'm a bit picky since it was brought in)
$Coastal Plains Toad (Big ?)
Knocked out *Bird-Voiced Treefrog (heard not seen and have locality info, I should be able to knock this one out)
Illinois Chorus Frog
Eastern Spadefoot
Alligator Snapping Turtle
Knocked out Southern Painted Turtle
Western Chicken Turtle
Eastern River Cooter
Razorback Musk Turtle
#Louisiana Milksnake
#Slowinkski's Cornsnake
Grahms's Crayfish Snake
Gulf Coast Crafish Snake
Midwest Worm Snake
Knocked out (not in AR) *Texas Coral Snake (I think this bad boy is always on everybody's mind)

So it looks like I removed three species last year. Still plenty of work to do. smile

Re: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

Good lists, guys.

Glenn, I think several on your list are *questionable* for AR anyway.  Maybe you should consider dropping a few to make it easier for yourself?  HA!

Spotted Dusky Salamander... I know some genetics work needs done on these, but I'm gonna say for now these would just occur historically on Crowely's Ridge.

Sequoyah Slimy Salamander...Not in AR.

Coastal Plains Toad...Not in AR.

Illinois Chorus Frog...Same as Strecker's according to most recent genetics.

Slowinkski's Cornsnake...No AR specimens; may not range into state.

Now, let's all go find some Corals!   cool

Re: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

Here's mine for this year, mainly for S AR since I'm in El Dorado.

coral snake
amphiuma
mudsnake (found a few roadkills but none alive)
Tiger salamander (southern AR)
four toed (found one in AL but not AR)
always enjoy the scarlet snake
milksnake ( I haven't ever found one, had a buddy lift up a rock I was sitting on and found one underneath it)
WDB as well as Timbers or even pigmy's.
bird-voiced frog

I just enjoy seeing things even if its my students bringing me critters.  I had a student bring me a marbled salamander today, it was a cute little guy.

I saw some crawfish frogs today.  I didn't find the population, my fiancee did las night and sent me a picture.  So I made the trip and went knee deep in the water for the catch.  Don't have any pictures yet.  This is a first find of this species for me.  Always a pleasure.

Might email Kelly Irwin about this.  He had an interest in S. Crawfish Frogs as of a year or two ago...and may still.  I think there is a good chance for these to get promoted to full species status after some genetic work.

Re: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

#1 Timber rattlesnake- have yet to ever find one in the wild
#2 MO Coachwhip
#3 MO Hognose
#4 Johnson county, MO flathead
#5 Johnson County, MO Cottonmouth
#6 Wild Mangrove monitor
#7 Wild Brown Tree Snake

If I get any of those this year, I will be happy, but since i will have to start my search in the hotter days in MO, it might be tough.

Re: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

Another post reminded me of this thread...

I know it's still early, but here are a couple of updates on my progress:

* Knocked off #04 (Marbled Salamander) FINALLY!!!  Took care of that one on the AHS spring field trip.  Plains and Hurter's Spadefoot were nice bonuses, even if I've found them before.

* Knocked off #06 (Red River Mudpuppy) with a little help from Renn on the location and seining technique.  Tried for #16 (Razor-backed Mud Turtle) in the afternoon, but the water was muddy from recent rains and weather was not cooperative.

* Made a hard try for #08 (Texas Coralsnake) during spring break, but it was probably still a little early.  We did improve some tin/trash sites and I'll likely make another attempt in the near future.

* Made a few outings for WDR.  I've practically felt hexed by the weather on almost every attempt for them this spring.  Also, I've been more interested in confirming a new locality rather than visiting those already known...so, I'm not completely surprised or even disappointed in getting skunked so far.  I'll continue to try through the spring and summer, but probably the next best chance won't come until fall.

* I've picked up a few additional audio recordings and photographs that I wanted to get, so I'm pretty much on track with improvements there.

All in all, not overly impressive or terrible so far.  This has been kind of a slow, cold spring.  More consistent, warmer weather may open up some night cruising possibilities soon.

Re: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

If you're wanting to find a Mississippi Green watersnake go to Arkansas Post National Park or the surrounding areas.  I'd honestly be surprised if you didn't see 5 or 6 of them in/around Alligator Slough in a single pass in decent weather.

Re: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

Well, since this topic is back up on the front page, i might as well update as well...

Found 6 DOR Brown tree snakes while out jogging
Saw one mangrove monitor perched up in a tree during an early morning jog on the golf course.

Not much longer before i get back and work on the rest of my list.

Re: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

I just found a Alligator Snapping Turtle at Tanyard Creek a couple of days ago. I have a picture if you would like it please send me a message!

Feel free to email pics, but I would think it must be a Common Snapper.  These get mixed up quite often.

Re: 2010 Wish Lists and Target Species

Well, with 2010 in its final waning days, here's my assessment of this year's goals...

kaptainkory wrote:

...Could be tough to find a "pure" specimen in AR.

02 Western Narrow-mouthed Toad (Gastrophryne olivacea) *

04 Marbled Salamander (Ambystoma opacum)
...Yes, for all the people that seem to turn these up, I have yet to claim my own.
...Success!

05 Ozark Hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis bishopi) *
...Have an "in" for these; plan to knock it off the list this summer.
...No survey work was conducted this year, so I'll have to wait till next.

06 Red River Mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus louisianensis) *
...Pretty much know where and how to find these, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
...Success!  Seined a juvenile.  I would still like an adult and they are apparently easier to find in the winter, so I might still try a time or two this winter break if it isn't too cold.

07 Western Lesser Siren (Siren intermedia nettingi)
...Know some people who would probably help me find these, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

08 Texas Coralsnake (Micrurus tener tener) *
...Will continue to try for these tricky little buggers until successful.
...Struck out on 3 attempts.

09 Slowinski's Cornsnake (Pantherophis slowinskii)
...Just talked to Kelly about these recently.  Apparently there aren't any specimens for AR, so it probably deserves "hypothetical status" anyway.
...Probably will update status to hypothetical and move it off the primary target list.

10 Variable Groundsnake (Sonora semiannulata semiannulata) *
...Know the spots for these; should make an attempt or two for them this spring.
...Never worked it out to find these this year.

11 Mississippi Green Watersnake (Nerodia cyclopion)
...Know some people who could help me with these, they're just far away and trickier to find.

12 Graham's Crayfish Snake (Regina grahamii)
...Don't really have many leads on turning up one of these.
...Now have a lead or two.

16 Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) *
...Might join in for some turtle trapping this summer for these?
...Didn't get a chance to turtle trap, but I did get my traps back.

17 Western Chicken Turtle (Deirochelys reticularia miaria)
...Don't really have much for leads on these.
...I think I have a lead or two on these now.

18 Ornate Box Turtle (Terrapene ornata ornata)
...Same as 02, though I'd really like to turn one up in AR.

19 Razor-backed Musk Turtle (Sternotherus carinatus)
...Have a spot for these, just have to make the time for them.
...Success!  Not found at the locality predicted, but who's complaining.

Worked a potential WDR slope very hard a few times this year, but came up empty.

I figure if I can knock off WDR, get at least 3-4 from my list above, and get improved photographs for a few others...it will be a successful year.  If I can ever get my Coralsnake, I've got to try for all the venomous in AR in a single year.  I think that would be cool.

Didn't get a Coralsnake AGAIN, but I did find all of the pitvipers!

Having found 3 out of my 20 primary targets and especially failing at Coralsnakes, I guess I would call the results somewhat mixed.  I did find several lesser targets for photographing and audio recorded additional frog calls.
