Topic: Road cruising lastnight.

With the warm temps lately I just had to get out even though it's probably a bit early.

On the way to my spot I found a fresh DOR speckled king.
Once at the spot I drove from 7:55 until around 10 40 and saw the following:

1 great plains rat
3 copper heads (one had been hit but was still alive. Indigo food!)
1 earth snake
1small timber rattle snake
1 DOR rough green

But the best find of the night was a black bear cub that ran across the road in the first 10 minutes for cruising!!! This was a lifer for me. Very cool!!!!  cool

I found the warm temps too good to resist as well...so after flipping 3 sipedons in a creek and 2 prairie racerunners under rocks...we set out for some pavement not far from my house... from dusk till about 30 min after...it was pretty good -3 live copperheads.  But the heat dissipated quickly thereafter. Found one DOR copperhead too...a monster...easily over 3ft.  Oh yeah...a couple bufo by a creek.   better than sittin at home for sure!

Had a truckload with me last night, and under the guise of a frogging trip, we roadcruised til about 10:30. Most of the herp movement was from right before dark til about an hour after.

1 AOR mud turtle
3 AOR plainbelly watersnakes
1 AOR juvi broadbanded watersnake ( bout 7 inches, cute little thing)
1 AOR cottonmouth
4 AOR diamondback watersnakes
                 and
1 DOR prairie kingsnake


The road ditches were literally crawling with crawfish, it was pretty weird to see them everywhere. Also heard cricket frogs and leopard frogs calling from the newly flooded rice fields.


****EDIT**** on a side note, i had my hands on a frog last night i just could not I.D. ---- did not have my field guide with me, and knew several species it was not ---- after a little gallery browsing turns out i had a green frog (maybe bronze frog?). Not super rare or anything i guess, but a "confirmed" first for me.

Speaking of bears....I took my wife and little brother down on the Talihena drive last Saturday and ran across 5 bears!...1 male (I'm assuming based on it's size...quite big), and a female with 3 cubs.....we drove up to where the female and cubs crossed and low and behold 2 of the cubs climbed a tree not 10 yards away and I got a couple nice pics of the 2 cubs just looking as we sat there and took pics.....pretty awesome!

where are the pics?
I wasn't able to get any of the one I saw. He ran when I got close with the car. I got out to look but saw nothing. I could hear him running through the woods though; sounded like a bull in a china shop!  big_smile
