Topic: Herpetology Related Careers

Hey folks, first time posting here. A friend referred me here, I must say this site in an excellent resource for herpetofauna related info. I plan on attending future meetings and get togethers when possible. Tomorrow I graduate UALR with my Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Management and Fisheries Biology. I've always had a fondness for Herps since I was a young boy, and took a particular interest to them in my Herpetology class my junior year as an undergrad. Eventually I plan on pursuing a graduate degree with an emphasis in herpetology. In the meantime however, I figured this would be the best place to get suggestions as to possible jobs here in the state with some relation to herpetology. Any suggestions from field ecology work to lab research are appreciated. I'll be fresh out of college, but have a huge willingness to learn and strong work ethic. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Could be a tall order...   sad  If you don't go the route of academia, there may be a few options with the state parks and/or forest service.  That would probably be about the best you could hope for, I think.  Maybe others can think of something I haven't.

Welcome to the site.

If you get lucky, you might be able to snag a job at the LR Zoo in the future, but parks/forest service and possibly AGFC are you best bets. Besides teaching as stated by Kory.

You'd be really really really lucky to get a full time job at Little Rock Zoo working herps... If you want to work in the zoo field with herps (or any animal group really), be prepared to move, possibly several times, before landing a full time position somewhere.

Re: Herpetology Related Careers

There are very few pure herpetology jobs out there. The best bet is a job that allows you to work with herps on occasion. One of the best in the state is some sort of regional/area biology type position. There a number through the state park system and the AG&F. You will be working with all animals or the ones of special concern. Many of these require an excellent knowledge of plants. I hope you took a regional flora or plant taxonomy type class. There are always some sort of part time work through the state. Even it is not working with herps, they are good way to get your foot in the door.
