Topic: Memorial Day Weekend Coraling
I met up with Matthew and Idun (and Jim) over Memorial Day weekend for another [failed] attempt at Arkansas Corals. I'm really starting to rack up some time, effort, and miles on this obsession! HA!
The weekend basically consisted of flipping cover, hiking a trail, driving some likely roads..."wash, rinse, repeat". A couple of staff members had spotted a Coral earlier this spring crossing one of the back roads nearby, so I KNOW my strategies are on target and that it's only a matter of time; it just wouldn't be this time.
Still, we came across a few neat things, as you can see:
Southern Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix contortrix)
Western Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma)
Northern Scarletsnake (Cemophora coccinea copei)
Southern Black Racer (Coluber constrictor priapus)
Texas Ratsnake (Pantherophis obsoletus)
Orange-striped Ribbonsnake (Thamnophis proximus proximus)
Eastern Gartersnake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis)
Earthsnake (Virgina sp.)
Prairie Lizard (Sceloporus consobrinus)
Common Five-lined Skink (Plestiodon fasciatus)
Broad-headed Skink (Plestiodon laticeps)
Little Brown Skink (Scincella lateralis)
Prairie Racerunner (Aspidoscelis sexlineata viridis)
Emydidae sp.
Three-toed Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis)
Mississippi Mud Turtle (Kinosternon subrubrum hippocrepis)
Eastern Musk Turtle (Sternotherus odoratus)
Toad (Anaxyrus sp.)
Blanchard's Cricket Frog (Acris blanchardi)
Western Bird-voiced Treefrog (Hyla avivoca avivoca)
Cope's Gray Treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis)
Green Treefrog (Hyla cinerea)
Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toad (Gastrophryne carolinensis)
American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus)
Green Frog (Lithobates clamitans ssp.)
Southern Leopard Frog (Lithobates sphenocephalus utricularius)
Central Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens louisianensis)
I also had a DOR Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) closer to home.

I also got a good audio recording of the Bird-voiced Treefrogs, which I will add to this post once processed.

Well, tonight felt like a killer night for road cruising...so I'm sure everyone else will post all of the cool things they found while I'm sitting here at the computer. ![]()
