Topic: Fall '10 Field Trip Discussion

Please view the original announcement post for trip details   http://www.herpsofarkansas.com/forum/to … tate-park/

This trip should be fun... its prime location for Corals and who could resist the lure of the Gurdon Ghost Light?

http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/2998

youtube videos of the anomaly and the story behind the legend.. or is that.. the legend behind the story? Supposedly you drive to a spot near the tracks and park, walking the rest of the way along the tracks a couple of miles and across at least four tressles. One video I saw theres some pretty knarly spots on the tracks to cross. I've yet to find any news articles of stupid kids falling off but Im still searching. Comes to mind a certain early field trip where a few daring individuals danced upon the tracks of death with highwire antics.. that was in the daylight and it still scared the crap out of me. I certainly cant see this happening with our goup after a few cold brews... but wonders never cease.

-- if you watch these next clips all in sucession it creates a neat little "documentary".. reminds me of Blair Witch.. not so sure if I'll be willing to go out there or not.. its not the Ghost light or the coyotes that scare me... its the freaks

Probably pretty boring for some of you to view through these... had to get the thread started with something though....

I'm ready! Can we leave now? big_smile

The only problem I have with White Oak is the sandy soil doesn't hold your tent stakes very well. Better invest in some large stakes and don't try to use those flimsy things that come with your tent!  tongue

Thanks Torry, but I will have some good stakes. My comment was meant as advice for the rest of the group.  big_smile

AHA!  Now I understand the REAL reason for the locality choice!  HA!  J/K   wink

Might be a good time to remind members to offer up suggestions for future field trips:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou … F8&z=7

...or download as a KML (Google Earth) file from the downloads page:

http://www.herpsofarkansas.com/Herp/Downloads

The KML file can actually be revised and resaved in Google Earth and then uploaded as an updated file, but I'll also be glad to take suggestions (with PROS and CONS, please) via email or on the forum.  If you post on the forum, better ask me specifically to have the information added, because I don't read minds and I'm not going to assume your intentions.   big_smile

If others wish to have a debate about this, I'll be happy to discuss it, but I feel very strongly that candidate locations for future field trips should come from suggestions offered BEFORE the next upcoming field trip.  In other words, anything added to the file before our 2010 fall field trip would be in consideration for the 2011 spring field trip, but anything offered after would be for 2011 fall or later.

I think the field trip committee is kind of getting to the point where we could really use some input from others on candidate locations.  As of right now, we only have 11 proposed locations for consideration in spring 2011.

You know.. I put that in the email string I sent out to a few members but I did fail to remember to put it in the thread... oopsie.  I do have one location suggestion to discuss putting on the map, will get that to you in time.

Are there any plans for a night-time boat ride around the lake, looking for our toothy friends that probably inhabit it? That never gets old ...........  big_smile

Re: Fall '10 Field Trip Discussion

I don't think there are many if any in the upper lake, but I've hear that there are some in the lower lake. Not sure how many "some" actually will be, but I'm sure someone will find them somewhere.

Somewhere along the way (maybe from park staff?), a few of us were directed to a place where one could occasionally be spotted.  I've stopped by at least once every time I've visited since and have yet to see one there.  Spotlighting from a boat would probably be the way to go for this.   ...and honestly, my time will be consumed looking for something with a little more yellow and red this field trip.   big_smile

Re: Fall '10 Field Trip Discussion

Hello Gang,

I will make the fall field trip to meet you guys and hopefully see some cool herps. Unfortunately, my wife is accepting a position in the NE so it may be the only field trip I make for a while sad Hope to meet as many as you as possible before I am forced to become an east coaster for a while!

Re: Fall '10 Field Trip Discussion

I'm looking forward to it. I already put in for the days off work, etc.

I'm with Kory on this one. I will be looking much more for little red yellow and black things than large toothy green and brown things.
