Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

Yeah, I think there is a way to merge threads...I'm just too lazy to figure it out right now.  In summary, he said he found a DOR Rough Green Snake in his driveway.  His profile says Texarkana, so I'm assuming this was in Miller Co.  That gives him credit for:

FIRST SNAKE
FIRST NONVENOMOUS SNAKE
FIRST COUNTY RECORD (Pending)

A new county record has to be vouchered.  If the snake has decomposed too much or he's thrown it off in a ditch, he misses out on that one.

Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

Okay, put me down for the first frog!  Temps were in the 67-70 range today!  Saw lots of turts and frogs in the water, but the only thing I could ID was a southern leopard frog!!!

I'll admit to, as almost pathetic as this is, that I worked very hard for this find!!!  I had to get soo close for a true ID, so it took me forever. All the while I was fighting off these horrible gnat-like creatures that were going into my eyes, ears, and mouth- if I happened to open it!!! I literally started jogging between water holes just to outrun the pests!!  But, darn it, I wanted on the list! LOL!!!

It's a good thing I'm not competitive!!

My husband just shakes his head.....

Good job!  Too bad I've been too busy to get out.  I *know* I could find something!   wink

Can you give a Location and Approximate Time?

I'm keeping the list in clean form for prosperity's sake:

Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

I found my critter at Bell Slough WMA around 2pm.

Yeah, Glen, I do have to say we probably have a bit of an advantage here in the middle portion of the state.  On average, it seems, our temps tend to be a little warmer than ya'lls.  smile

Take care - and I don't think I've said this - Happy New Year!!!

First Sallie:  Dark-sided Salamander.

Had a chance to flip a few logs around my house this afternoon.  The temperature and moisture were perfect.  I also found an Ozark Zig-zag Salamander and heard some Spring Peepers.  The Spring Peepers led me to a small woodland pond...should be a good place to check out from time to time.

Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

Hey, Kory.  I do have pics and all the collection data on that Rough Green Snake that I released last fall.  If memory serves me correctly, this should work for varifying the record(Miller CTY is right).  Is this correct?

Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

Ed,
That should work.  If you will email me privately, I can work with you to get it submitted.  The process isn't difficult, but takes a little coordination.

(No credit for a new county record THIS year, I guess...  sad  )

Here are the remaining categories for 2005:

FIRST VENOMOUS SNAKE
FIRST LIZARD
FIRST TURTLE
FIRST ALLIGATOR
FIRST WITH SPECIAL STATUS
FIRST NEW COUNTY RECORD

Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

Ed's snake was a Rough EARTH snake, not Rough GREEN snake...oops.

Yeah, Glen, I'm thinking about hiking around some smaller local lakes this weekend if the 60 degree weather holds (which, I'm sure, it won't).  I figure I could see some turtles that way; getting a positive ID could be tough.

Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

Unfortunately, Kory, it looks like the temps are going to be dropping.  We're looking at 40 degree weather for the next week or so.  sad

I have to say, it was nice to hear the spring peepers the last couple of days - but I wasn't seeing any turtles.  I've got my eye out....

Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

well im wanting to get into something far more dangerous than the typical hots we will encounter while out herping.  anyone up for planning a southern arkansas gator hunt? just a thought.  i know it would take lots of planning to actually get something going but after all we have learned that we can plan good meetings (mt. magazine).  and who can say they dont want to go find a gator lol.

Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

Ryan, anytime you or anyone else wants to hunt these guys, I will be glad to introduce you to some.  There are several areas around  Texarkana that have them and I always enjoy seeing them. While I cannot guarantee you will see one, there is probably a 70% chance or better that you will see one or more.  Feel free to email me direct about this.

Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

Has anyone found the first turtle yet? I found a box turtle in elkins. unfortunately, the turtle was dead, frozen. But i found it in my sister's backyard, so it gives me hope of finding more herps around here in the spring.

Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

I'm not for sure what type of box turtle, i'm not sure of what species are in arkansas. however, i don't think it was an ornate. it has a dull patern on its shell. it was found monday jan 18th at about 2 pm in Elkins, Arkansas.

By the way, i'll be here until april, if anyone in this area would like to do some herpin. I Don't know of any good areas, except there may be something in my sister's backyard.

Re: FIRST FINDS - 2005

Ryan, etc., if you want to see some alligators but can't make the long drive to Texarkana, just let me know. There is a small wildlife preserve area here called Kingfisher, which was stocked with alligators sometime in the 80s or early 90s. Mark and I see the big adults there every time we go. They inhabit a small man-made lake/large pond. There are at least 3 large adults and I've seen juveniles there before as well. The adults are almost always on the bank of a small island in the middle of the lake. Get down here sometime when it gets a bit warmer, and we'll take the canoe out and see them (yes, I said canoe, but don't worry, we've not tipped yet! lol).
