On the way home from picking oldest son up from a school dance an armadillo walked out in the road in front of us near Blakely Dam. Eldest son and hubby decide to jump out and catch it to take a good look at one. (this was quite hilarious!!!)
Nine-Banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus)

Will and Loren getting a closer look...

Just thought we would post and let everyone else see as well....Armadillo safely released after photos.

Bois D'arc Lake
Near the SE corner of levee and probably 7-8 feet in length. Suprisingly not sluggish as I expected this early in the year. I hope to get a camera with more zoom one day.
Here is a link.

Looks like just about everything has been covered... too bad... I've seen a ton of fence lizards... how about first tick? I wasn't very happy finding one of those already...
Yesterday, I came home from work to find a turtle in my bath tub. I started to ask Anja where she found the turtle....but I was wrong. It was another junior herping find!
Legend found this box turtle road cruising(on his bike) crossing the road behind our house.

Not bad for a cold wet day in february....
That almost does it for the first finds this year! Great job everyone!
I've updated the official record:

The only remaining category is NEW COUNTY RECORD. We'll probably take care of that one at the Spring Field Trip if someone doesn't get it earlier.
I'm a little confused. What does New County Record mean? Does it have to do with size, or a specimen not previously accounted for in that county? Just curious.

Specimen not previously accounted for in that county. Check the county lists for what has and has not been verified for each county. You can access the county lists from the "Species List" area of the website.
I think I can get the new county record....
I've found 7-8 redbacks (what I believe to be redbacks) in Pulaski county - they are not varified there yet. I'll get some pics out to you tomorrow Kory.

Before march? thats gotta be some kind of record, huh?

So, does it count if the snakes come to me? This is my first spring in my new (to me) rock house, which is apparently snake HEAVEN. This week, a black rat snake literally "hanging around" in the living room; another either BRS or racer on the walkway; and the speckled king between the front door mat and the front door. We had mice in the fall, but I thought I'd gotten them all. Could the snakes still be smelling them? Does rat poison attract snakes? Is someone punking me? Finding them when you're not looking is a bit unsettling... the river is a couple of miles away. Your comments? Thoughts? I grew up on a farm and NEVER had an experience like this! AND no, I haven't killed any of them.
