Topic: Changes to members' forum permissions

Regular forum members can no longer take the following actions:

* Edit their own posts.
* Delete their own posts.
* Delete their own topics (including any replies).

There has been too much "rewriting of history" lately on the forum, in this administrator's opinion.  The intention of these privileges was to allow members to make minor changes to their posts...correct typos and the like.  But it seems there has been some abuse as of late, to the extent that entire thread narratives have been altered beyond original understanding and integrity.

Please don't ask me to delete (or make major edits to) any old posts you may feel regretful about, the answer is "no".  (Believe me, I have some old posts I'm quite ashamed of myself!)  I'll suggest that regular members take extra care and precaution about what they do post...better spell-check and be triply sure you are posting what you want to post...because, in all likelihood, it is going to stay that way.   cool

Thanks for your understanding.

Re: Changes to members' forum permissions

I guess I've missed something. I'm not sure what has happened to bring about this change, but it is unfortunate.
In my opinion you should deal with incidents on a case by case basis rather than making a blanket change such as this.
I have used the edit feature on several occasions to correct minor mistakes in my posts as I'm sure many others have as well.
That being said, it is your forum and you are free to do with it whatever you wish; but I hope you'll reconsider.

Now this has me interested in what threads have been edited in such a manner!

This is something that unfortunately has happened a few times in the site's history  that has rececently resurfaced... the structure of a thread.. discussion... or even debate.. should always be held in tact so that its clear to the reader (or moderator) who reviews it during and after any conflict...

All members should be accountable for their own comments, even if- the responses are not what they desired.  Most typo's we disregard.. punctuation we dont really care about.. if a source is mis-cited or needs an amendment, just reply to the original with your intended text or ask a Moderator (Kory, Torry, Josh) to help out with that. We will determine if the post needs to be closed or deleted in the event a discussion has turned south.

This all sounds awfully "big brother knows best" - ish.

When will we be required to submit our "posts" to a moderator for approval before they are actually posted to the forum?

I humbly urge moderation from our Moderators ................  neutral

These changes protect your posts as much as anyone else's...and do so more fairly than before.  No one is "watching" more closely now than before, nor--in theory--should mods/admins step in to moderate any more than before.

WHAT???  I'm not sure how to even address this...  No need to get so paranoid and irrational.  The world will not end.   big_smile

The result of these actions should be LESS moderating of the forum.  If that's what you are urging, then consider your wishes granted.   cool

Re: Changes to members' forum permissions

Kory, while you're getting bashed for making the change, let me just say I agree with you.  On a few occasions, in the past and recently, I've been out of town for a few days and came back to see a flame war going on.  When I try to read through the days old messages, I'm left wondering why everyone got so bent out of shape, only to find out that the old posts were deleted.  Then I'm curious what went on to start it all.  That's when I call Josh to see what happened!  Oh, and Josh, I'll be calling you soon..

And by the way, in my years on this forum, I've never (to my recollection) used the edit feature.  If I notice a mistake in one of my posts, I correct it in a follow-up post.  It works for me...

Thx.  I've honestly been surprised that some have had such an issue with it (...and haven't been all too shy about speaking out either.  HA!).

Besides, the change to edit settings was always intended as a stop-gap measure anyway, so I wasn't really sweating it myself.  I figured as soon as I gave it back, with some needed protections in place, all would be set right again.  (And no, I'm under no obligation to divulge the intentions behind administrative decisions...although sometimes I do share *some* thoughts as a courtesy.)  After some research, it appears that a solid compromise solution does not currently exist.  Sooo...I may end up writing the extension myself (which would probably be winter break at the earliest).  But, like most people, I respond more favorably to honey than to vinegar.   wink
