Topic: Future AHS Field Trips - Location Discussions

*Edited by Josh*
I just changed the title of this thread so we can continue future discussions about field trips.
**

Yes, it has gotten to the point where the *next* field trip must come under consideration even before the *current* field trip has come to pass.  http://www.herpsofarkansas.com/AHS/Files *click the google earth download.zip to view*  If you have any to add, please reply to this post, PM, or email Torry.  Include pros and cons, etc. as modeled in the map.  Once the field trip committee enters the early planning stages for the 2011 spring field trip, which should be very soon, only locations present on this map will be available for selection (i.e. no last-second adds and/or surprises).  We appreciate your input and consideration! big_smile

Village Creek State Park lists bigfoot as a con... I'm pretty sure that's a pro!

Hot Springs

Re: Future AHS Field Trips - Location Discussions

To clarify a little. This thread is more about adding new locations or new pros/cons to old locations. This isn't a vote for where to go next. We've tried the "where to next voting". Messy is an understatement, LOL. That's why we decided to form the field trip committee to narrow things down. Kory put together this great list based on threads like this one and discussions at previous field trips.

For example, just saying "Hot Springs" doesn't add much. It's great that you want to go there (I enjoy that area). It's better to say Hot Springs because we can camp at _____ and there are good places to find ____. Not singling anyone out, just using your post as an example.

That said, I agree that Bigfoot is a pro....well until he/she throws my tent into a creek or something lol.

Huntsville/Madison Co. area. If UofA has any projects going on we can assist them in their research.  After the last few summers it may be fun to go out and look for 'normal' stuff. Not to mention i'm going to be hanging out over there and can ask around and get intel on any possible herping areas. Plus there is quite abit of public land if I'm not mistaken.

I like the madison county idea. Pretty part of the state, and looks like some decent places around.                                                                                                                          Tobin

How about snake road in southern IL?

Ever wonder why conservatives are called the right and liberals are called the left?

Why are proposals being made for Illinois????? I was going to make a smart-assed comment about there not being a pretty looking marker on Southern Ill,but I see that they've all be removed from the map....nice.....

Re: Future AHS Field Trips - Location Discussions

I'm in for Snake Road because it's not too much farther than where we just went, from here at least, and it's somewhere I have never herped at or near. I'm not picky though, as long as there are snakes, I'm happy to be there.

Re: Future AHS Field Trips - Location Discussions

The original post here has been edited to include the downloadable Google Earth map which still contains all the proposals and past field trip locations to date... Please direct all future proposals and ideas to me (Not Kory) --- thank you!

I've made several attempts at moving it west slightly. I have several spots in NE Oklahoma that would be quite successful. The consensus always seems to be to stay in AR for the 2 "official" trips and create side trips elsewhere.

Re: Future AHS Field Trips - Location Discussions

she called me once freaking out about a lizard in her windowsill... she lives in LaCeiba, right on the coast but her back yard butts up against the forest and theres a river nearby.. well I had a time finding any resource for Honduran reptiles but... Im pretty sure it was a Jesus Lizard.. she said he hung out bobbing at her and she put canned dog food in the sill to eat..  She said she doesnt see snakes often but then shes not the type to go wandering in the woods either.

I've spent some time up in the Shores Lake area in the Ozark Woods, and it's pretty nice up there... Not exactly sure what the camping situation is or anything, but there are snakes. haha
