Topic: 1st snake of the year

Jeremy, Brad and I got an e-mail invitation to join another guy and at some atrox dens on private property and since it's been a long winter and the weekend's  forecast was looking great we just had to get out and poke around a little sadly, Brad decided to wimp out and stay home like a good little boy.  tongue

We got to the site around 11:00 am and by 11:30 had found our first d-back, a female around 3-3.5' in length and just over 2.5 lbs. I was really excited to hear the lovely buuzzzzzzz again after many months cooped up in the house.

shortly after that, Jeremy spotted a small coachwhip poking it's head out of a den but it had no intentions of sticking around for a photo shoot. We spent a couple more hours looking around but were unable to turn up anything else. Oh well, it was great getting to see the 1!!!!! cool

Picture attached but it's from my iphone. If you want to see the good pics you'll have to wait on Jeremy to upload his.

Ever wonder why conservatives are called the right and liberals are called the left?

Sweet!  sounds like she was fat & sassy!   And the coachwhip?  -well, fleeing is just what they do, ha ha ha...  I do like their faces poking up, at least you got that much!

Re: 1st snake of the year

I flipped two ringnecks today! Kinda cool since they're my first AR ringers... and then had a herper fail moment.
I flipped a board that I had laid out rather recently at this spot. As soon as I flipped it, I just saw still kinda fresh matted grass, so I put it down... As soon as I set the board back it clicked in my head that there was a snake on top of the grass, so I flipped it again quickly, only to see a tail disappear under the grass, only to not be seen ever again. It was probably 12 inches or so, and from the pattern that I was able to glimpse, it was most likely either a young black rat or a young prairie king. The latter being the most common larger snake in the area from what I've been told.
Either way, would have been a lifer, and I'm kind of kicking myself in the ____ on that one.

Yup. It happened a few times last year, all on things I didn't end up getting rest the year. They would have up'd my total to 120 species/subs for the year instead of 113 I think.

I just quit counting "the ones that got away". Otherwise, I would get discouraged.  hmm

I usually don't pay attention to them, but when they're things that you look for for years that are no where near common, it's hard. haha. One was a Zonata from the hardest subspecies to locate, and one of the hardest locales to herp for them. That one hurt. haha

Why don't you just count sight observations and fugetaboutit?   wink
