Topic: AHS Spring Field Trip- Poteau Mt area, Boles, Ar| May 6-8th 2011

Field Trip Details:

Who? AHS field trips are open to members and nonmembers alike.  If you are interested in finding herps in the wild and meeting with others who like to do the same, you are invited and encouraged to join us.

What? It's a field trip!  AHS field trips are a fun experience if you have never attended one.  Our ranks include newbies, hobbyists, graduate students, science professionals, and even youngsters (our "herpetologists in training").  We share a family-like camaraderie and welcome newcomers with open arms.

When? May 6, 7, 8th - 2011.  What most people will do is arrive Friday evening and leave Sunday midmorning.  Most of the herpin' FUN will happen on Saturday.

Where? Midway Park Cabins, 17587 Hwy 71 South
Boles, AR.  We will be focusing on the Poteau Mountain area in Scott and Sebastian county Cedar Creek WMA and Possibly Muddy Creek WMA

Facilities include: Non-primitive facilities in this area for our group are very scarce- Private accomodations were required for this trip. This facility has offered us a small cabin to use for Kitchen and Bath facilities and allowed us to camp with tents surrounding the building. It offers a clean, flat ground surface and outdoor fire pit for the fireside chair circle.

Directions:17587 Hwy 71 South, Boles, AR, 72926--  From the north, (highway 71), you will pass a gas station on your right just past the Fouche la fave river crossing. Go about half a mile and look for a red brick house on your left.  There will be a small sign at the driveway that says cottage and lake at midway park. Turn up this road and it will take you up the hill to the cottage/camping area. The cottage is going to be a light colored house near the lake. From the south, turn right (north) onto 71 and go just past the old midway park restaurant and the driveway will be on the right.

Cost? The AHS does not require dues for membership, however ; Camping fees for this trip will be $ 20 per person if 15 attend,  $15 if 20 people attend, whether you camp one night or both. Children over the age of 5 should be included in the per person fee.  A donation jar will be available to accept camping fees and help offset the cost of group meals. Fees and Donations can also be prepaid via PAYPAL *no later than April 22
(FYI- **It generally costs about $200.00 for all group meals and supplies for 25-30 people)

Food? To reduce impact of multiple campfires, maintain schedules and communication-  group meals will be prepared and served fireside on Friday evening, Saturday morning and Saturday evening. A simple Hot Dog lunch will be prepared Saturday Noon for those that wish to partake - first come first serve. Attendees should otherwise plan to bring their own lunches, drinks and snacks.

Please RSVP - ASAP by email or PM so that preparations can be made for the group meals.  This field trip will NOT be canceled due to weather.  Please call or text 870-404-8625 after Thursday, May 5th, to indicate any change in your plans.

*Note to new participants:
The people coming with you need to have their camp fees in hand as well, as we go on a per person basis  paying for our group facilities. I need to know their names so I can put them on the Attendance Roster -  It is expected that all attendees participate in the group meals and fireside circle to keep impact of multiple fires, etc to a minimum.

Dang!  Jacob won his Pinewood derby and will be racing in the districts at the Ft. Smith mall on Sat. the 7th.
Not sure I'll be able to make it. Maybe I'll come Sat. after the races, but I'll miss most of the herping.

And a washer and dryer for dirty clothes. We may get spoiled this trip. Lol. I spoke with a USFS biologist this morning and I should have plenty of good spots scouted out for field activities.  big_smile

Anyone that has not emailed Torry to confirm your attendance, please do so ASAP. It really makes it difficult when we expect 10 and 35 show up. If you don't confirm, plan to eat your own food, and hope for leftovers.

I am going to copy maps of areas I have scouted, for those that want one. For the sake of saving money (and a few plantation pines), please post here or PM me if you want some maps.

Re: AHS Spring Field Trip- Poteau Mt area, Boles, Ar| May 6-8th 2011

UPDATE:

I spoke with the lady that runs the camp (her name is Deborah), and she said we have permission to search for and collect herps from their land. She said many snakes have been seen  in the area, including rattlers. They have 14 acres along Mill creek and another 87 acres on the side by the camp, including rocky, mountainside habitat and the small lake. I just got my AGFC scientific collecting permit in the mail today and would be glad to provide a copy to any sub-permittees that want to collect. Just remember to report back to me on the location (GPS coordinates prefered). I will bring copies of the permit to the camp on Friday (5/6/11). If anyone has any questions, post or PM me.

It's kind of hidden, but the drive way is on the left side of the highway, just past the shell station (used to be a finish line station I think) at Y City.

A Shell Station close by? That's a plus. Brad I'm not sure if there is an easy way to get there!! I figure on hitting 540 down to FS and go from there.

I will call miss Deborah today and get some detailed directions. Also, I plan on arriving early (shooting for noon), and will put a sign up at the road. And if you pm me with your cell numbers, I will text back. That way you can call on your way down if you have problems.

Thanks for those directions Tobin -- the mapping sites just dont offer clear or even diluted information on how to get there, just kind of puts a spot on a map.

FYI -- I've only got about 9 persons confirmed for this trip and several of you its by word of other' members mouths... you need to CONFIRM WITH ME  as soon as possible so we get an accurate head count for camp fees and food purchases.

Snake-Boy --- my lack of forum presence leaves me with a blank... What is your name? Age? Who will you be coming with? You need to PM me with this information

I will likely come on Saturday afternoon/evening and hang with everyone and hopefully do some road cruising. I will bring my own food for Sunday.
