Topic: Anyone Been to Arkansas Post National Memorial?

If some pieces fall into place, I'm considering taking an extended weekend outing to Arkansas Post National Memorial in about a month.  If anyone has ever been there--and especially if you've herped there--I'd appreciate any help/tips you might be willing to pass along.  Please PM or email.  Thanks.

Re: Anyone Been to Arkansas Post National Memorial?

I am planning to take my parents to Arkansas Post next weekend (April 16th).  I would like to see a gator since I have never seen one in Arkansas before (at least a wild one).  If there are any specific places that would provide the best opportunities, please message me.

Josh and I went there back in maybe 2006 or 2007. We just passed through to see if we could happen to see a gator or two. We were told we would only be able to see them at night from a boat with a spotlight. Apparently it would be impossible to see them from the bank during the day. Well, we went anyway and saw this...

Plus, we saw a total of about 20 gators, mostly small ones.

We didn't do much herping there. This big gator was visible from the road. There was a turn-off into a parking area near the water where we looked around and saw a bunch of small gators swimming around and a couple of water snakes (I think one was a Mississippi Green if I'm remembering right). The other was a broad-band...

There's also a lot of nutria there. It was the first time I had ever seen those. It was also the only time I had ever seen an Anhinga (and the first time Josh ever heard me say "Cool!" when he pointed out a bird to me).

Very cool, Jonathan.  I'm getting a pretty good vibe about finding some of my 2011 targets there.  Hopefully I will.

Just a quick question...  Do gators normally attack people in canoes???...that one in the picture looks like a big boy!  HA!!!

I've canoed around large gators at Kingfisher near Centerville and have never had one do anything but flee. I think you'd be safe.

Yea, I was semi-kidding.  But it could still be a little uncomfortable to see an Alligator bigger than your boat come up beside you...especially if canoeing at night (which I may think about doing).

Re: Anyone Been to Arkansas Post National Memorial?

I helped conduct a herp survey there and spent a lot of time there for about 3 summers in a row.

What are your targets? Mississippi green watersnakes and alligators are usually easy finds there.

Primary targets:

Green Watersnake
Graham's Crayfish Snake
Mudsnake

Secondary targets:

Alligator
Alligator Snapping Turtle
Chicken Turtle
Southern Painted Turtle
Amphiuma
Siren

I figure if I can knock off 2-3 primary targets and 1-2 secondary targets, I'll consider it a resoundingly successful weekend.  Really, I am crossing my fingers for Mississippi Green and Graham's...and everything else will be bonus.

Kory, you are more than welcome to swing by El Dorado and see if we can have any luck on the swamp critters (as long as we aren't looking for venomous critters, we do alright big_smile ) either to or from Arkansas Post.

I appreciate the offer, Matt, but I may have to plan for this for another time.  It would literally add a multi-hour detour to my drive.   wink

Re: Anyone Been to Arkansas Post National Memorial?

I went to Arkansas Post today and saw my first gator in Arkansas (at least a wild gator).  It swam off the shore before I could take a shot so I only got a shot of it quite a distance from shore.
