Topic: Pretty good start to my herping season

So far I've continued my lazy herping. I haven't bothered to get out and do much active herping. Most has been just running across stuff. I finally stopped at one of my sites on my way home from work yesterday and actually flipped some rocks, lol. Even though I haven't put much effort in, I think I've had a decent beginning. Hope to add a lot more very soon.

N. Crawfish Frog - TMTC heard (sorry, too lazy to go to pond for pics)
S. Leopard Frog - TMTC heard
Boreal/Cajun/Spotted Chorus Frog (can't remember for sure what we have here) - TMTC heard
Gray Treefrog - 7 plus TMTC heard
Dwarf American toad - TMTC heard
Cricket frogs - TMTC heard
Spring Peeper - ~4 heard in S. Missouri

Prairie Racerunner - 1
5-lined skink - TMTC
Great Plains skink - 2

Map turtle sp. - several
Missouri River cooter - several
Red-eared slider - TMTC

Prairie Ringneck snake - 3

Yep, good start.  Looks like this is going to be about the 3rd year in a row I skip out on the Crawfish Frogs.

Re: Pretty good start to my herping season

Sweet, Josh. I've been doing pretty good too. I'm up to ten or 11 snake species for the year, and today was my 3rd outing in a row with double digits of snakes (and I only flipped an hour or so after work).

Unfortunately my best pond might not have a great future. It is literally 100 yards from the nearest houses and the development continues all around it. I hope they leave this area alone due to the poor drainage, but I'm sure it'll be trashed eventually.

With next week's forecast being in the 80's again, I hope I'll be able to get out and find plenty more. I have had a couple people already report some dor Bullsnakes so I expect I'll start turning them up very soon. I think this is going to be the Spring that brings me out of my herping rut, LOL.

Re: Pretty good start to my herping season

This past week I saw/heard.....

Rough Earth Snake - 8
Prairie Ringneck - 11
Graham's Crayfish Snake - 1-5 every day in same location so likely are mostly repeats
Diamondback Watersnake - 1-10 every day in same location so likely are mostly repeats
Blotched Watersnake - 0-3 every day in same location so likely are mostly repeats

Great Plains Skink - 3 from same sight as the 2 from last week
Broadhead Skink - Haven't grabbed any to confirm ID (I'm pretty sure they get this far West)
5-lined Skink - TMTC
Ground Skink - TMTC
Prairie Racerunner - 3

Mud/musk Turtle - 1 basking on log in pond
Map Turtles - 5
Sliders/Cooters - TMTC
Common Snapping Turtle - 1

S. Leopard frog - TMTC heard
Gray Treefrog - 2 + TMTC heard
GP Narrowmouth Toad - 1
Dwarf American Toad - TMTC heard
Chorus frog - TMTC heard

Think that's about it. Really can't wait to start adding a lot of new species.

Re: Pretty good start to my herping season

A couple of nights ago I did a little backyard herping. Turned up 8 Ringneck Snakes (under 2 rocks), 1 GP Narrowmouth Toad, and 1 E. Yellowbelly Racer.

A welcomed sight when I flipped the rock.

Instead of biting like a lot of racers, this one just went into hardcore defense mode.

It even let me flip it over to show it's yellow.

Size reference.

After a few, I managed to get it to stretch out for one last pic.

And lastly, here is the little toad I flipped. It only sat still for 1 pic before spazzing and getting lost in the grass.

This shot is just to prove I was literally backyard herping, lol.
