Topic: What can you do with 41 year old glass?

No herping the past week has left me pretty bored... bored enough, in fact to, dare I say, take pictures of bugs...

Anyhow, these were taken on a Nikon D7000 with a 1969 Nikkor 55mm micro (fully manual) and an equally old Nikon extension tube... (I picked the pair up for a little over 20 bucks).

Just goes to show that you don't always need the newest lenses to get some clear shots..

One thing I learned hanging out with entomologists is that true "bugs" are in the order hemiptera, flies are in the order diptera.  So although the pic is not of a true "bug", the fly picture is awesome big_smile .

I still like to call all insects "bugs" just to get people riled up wink .

Sweet pics.  What f/stop?...must be pretty small for the depth of field you were able to get.  I have extension tubes, too, but have rarely used them.  Now, I'm thinking I should dust them off and see what I can do.   smile

....chasing a fly and hit a dip-diptera.   Squash a bug with a book of hyms-hemptera.  Cats got fleas, syphon gas to get rid of fleas-syph syptera(or something)  Covered with lice and Zoro knocks them of w/his whip...Zora-zoraptera....Is this worth any extra Zoology credit?

Sweet!

Ever wonder why conservatives are called the right and liberals are called the left?

Re: What can you do with 41 year old glass?

Sorry guys, they're all bugs to me. Hahaha

Kory, here's the EXIF.

Top shot:
1/200
F/8
ISO 100

2nd shot:
1/125
F/8
ISO 200

I believe with the extension tubes and the amount of light that gets 'blocked' before reaching the sensor, it should have been the equivalent of approx. f/12 or so.

....buck-toothed grasshopper-needs an ortha-orthaptera.   In 'Goodfellas' Robert DiNero stomps a guy like a roach-guys name is Batts-b(l)at-Blatodea.  Termites make your house collapse and fall through the ice-ice-isoptera...   Still gotta study some more before my Zoology exam.

I missed 2 questions on Zoology Exam 3 which included insects, and 2 on the final, which was on vertebrates.  The fish was the hardest for me.  At 54, memorization can be a challenge.  (Knowing Latin would be helpful)  Kevin Trudeax's MegaMemory taught me that using outrageous, silly images and actions relaxes the mind so that it can work better.
