Topic: Praire Kings

Well I just bought a home on 5 acres off pleasantview Rd Russellville. I was happy to find a Large female king and a smaller male. I also found a Ring Neck snake and a dekay snake as well as a few different salamanders and skinks a couple lizards. There has been a black racer, friendly lil guy. He chose my shop as his home apparently we always seem to run into each other. I lucked out and got a place with some junk laying around out back. Various lengths of wood and tin. I can just herp in my yard lol. Well take care all I am just all excited about the herps on my property. Prairie King is one of my favs. I only kept the smaller male for now. I usually just take pics these days. big_smile

Nice PK!  I've seen ones like that, almost patternless with some striping...pretty cool. Sounds like we need to plan a field trip to  your back yard!

I didn't know what they were for many years.  A fellow boy scout caught one when I was 13, and I kept it a while in a cage w/a black rat, and I thought it was some sort of mutant rat snake!(even though it lacked the keeled scales)  I kept on mis-IDing them for years-later as black kings(even though they don't have the L. getula marks on the sides of the neck.)  In 2005, I looked in an Arkansas Snake Guide, and (even though the Prairie King in the guide was strongly marked) I figured it must be the ones I'd been seeing!

Nice find! I live next door in Dardanelle. Or outside of Dardanelle anyway. I haven't came across any prairies around here for a while, hoping to see some this year. If you ever run across some good habitat around the Russellville area and wanna go herping, give me a shout!
