Topic: Banner day in west central missouri

Well, for one, i do have pictures, but my computer is being screwy and won't let me upload them to photobucket. But here is my account of todays outing.

It started out like a normal day cruising with my woman looking for some red tailed hawks. On one of the roads we were on, we passed by one of my trash sites so i decided to get out to take a look. Under the third piece of tin, i found the first speckled kingsnake i've seen since 2005, and of course the first one i've seen in my county. then, under a piece of ply wood, i found an orange striped ribbon snake, unfortunately it got injured in the ordeal. i didn't realize that there was a cinder block on part of the board, so when i lifted it, it pinned the ribbon snake. I was able to avoid further injury to it, and since i already stressed it out enough, i didn't hold onto it for pics. But i did get one shot of the small mouthed salamander next to it. I only took one shot because that poor guy dried out really fast and i didn't want to kill it trying to get better shots. Also at that same spot i found a few skinks and a box turtle. Also found a dead smooth earth snake under a board.

I then decided to drive way out to my other spot, which is conveniently placed on the corner of a major road. It is like an old abandoned gas station or something, but its got tons of tin and flippable stuff around it, and is far enough away from anything else that it has great potential. after searching vigorously, i was getting ready to give up when i saw a barely visible piece of tin under some grass. So i lifted it and kinda jumped to what i found. Possibly a breeding pair of yellow bellied racers. The smaller male took off to a nearby tin while the female just idly sat by. It was very docile for a racer and i was able to get several good shots of it. Then i went to get the male but he was a little hyped up so i left it alone. Also to note, there was a heavy growth of green onions right there, so it was quite fun looking through that to the smell of green onions. will be back there to hopefully get a prairie king... i want that trifecta this year!

Anyway, i hope to get those pics up soon.

I did forget to mention the strange behavior of the kingsnake. It was twitching it head (something i more commonly see in a pigmy). it also tilted its head back almost like a cottonmouth, only without its mouth open. It didn't rear up like any of the other kings that i've found. Then of course, when ever i made anymovements, it would strike. Once i get the pictures uploaded, you will see what i'm talking about.

Re: Banner day in west central missouri

it was, considering i found just as many species of snake yesterday as i did all of last year... quickly, here is a look at what i found last year:
1 lined snake
6 brown snakes
3 ringneck snakes
TMTC northern watersnakes (as usual)
1 smooth earth snake
1 Western rat snake
1 DOR pigmy rattlesnake

I'm almost to that count and i've only been out twice this year, ha!

As promised, here are the pics.

Here is the single photo of the (i think) smallmouthed salamander, all it wanted to do was get out of the sun and hide, so i only got the one photo and quickly got it back under the board.

The obligatory Northern Watersnake, i found this along with 7 others huddled around one rock, pretty intense. i had two in my hands while trying to grab another, haha. i was being selfish, i wanted them all.

And the female yellowbellied racer. Like i said before, i left the male alone, i think he was mad because i might have interrupted something.... anyways, here are some of the better shots i got. This one was quite docile and just wanted to bury its head under its body. something i've seen from a lot of racers and coachwhips.
