Topic: Snake in my yard!

I first saw this snake when it dashed for cover last year, and I hoped it was still about.  That question was answered today, when I observed my two dogs nosing too intently in my thickly grown garden.  They were not deterred when I yelled at them either so I went right out and sure enough!  Just a good sized adult eastern garter, very healthy looking, and female I believe.  She thought about biting me but didn't (I kept my hands under her, even when she "gator-rolled"!) but she left me smelling pretty rank!  Ahhh, spring!  Trees leafing out, flowers blooming and snake musk!?
I'd love to see her now & then in my yard, but in her best interest (and because I'm not sure I'd forgive my dogs for hurting or killing her!) I think I'll be relocating her tomorrow.  I have a few places in mind, near a pond or small lake & away from humans as much as possible.  (right now she is a city slicker!)  Knowing snakes learn their way around, I hate to move her anywhere, but hopefully she can adapt ok.
If it hadn't been for my dogs, I'm not sure I'd have seen her...so well she blended with the plants!

Re: Snake in my yard!

The "rest of the story" is I found a great and SAFER place for this snake to live!  A small lake, with thick forest & endless cover to one side...hey, I wanna be a snake living there!?  When I first slid her out of the container, she went in a little ways and then stopped, watching me?  (She must have thought I was gonna chase her?)  I know this was the right thing to do, my dogs are just too pesky!
