Topic: Tell me what you think....

Well I'm not sure this is where this belongs, but here it goes. As some know, my partner and I are building a rodent business. To date we have a 3500 sq ft building and enough racks systems to produce 20K mice and 4K rats each month. When completely fitted we'll be able to produce 3 to 4 times this amount. That said, the rodents have begun to fill our racks and we already have and quotes on a second building which will more than double our capabilities.

I'd like to share my thoughts and glean your thoughts concerning the rodent business.

1 - One size fits all shipping. You order 100 pinky mice and they come in a huge box with 15-20lbs of dry ice. Who wants to spend $50 to ship a small order of mice.  We have set up multiple box sizes with varying insulation values to meet the requirements of small shipments.

2 - Packaging! I need your thoughts here. I prefer ziplock bags over vacuum packaging. My thought is that as soon as I slice open the vacuum pack I have to put it in a ziplock anyway. What are your thoughts on vacuum packing vs. zipper bagging.

3. Organized deliveries. If I could establish areas with enough demand I wouldn't mind delivering large quantities of rodents. This could potentially save a lot on shipping costs. Do you think that any groups out there could develop a large enough order to make a trip to Little Rock or NW AR worthwhile.

These are just the thoughts of an overworked man with lots of pokers in the fire. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rich

Re: Tell me what you think....

The only positive thing about vacuum sealing as opposed to ziplocks is if someone is buying in large enough quantities to stay stocked up for a few months. Personally, I'm not a fan of keeping rodents frozen in ziplocs for months on end because they will get freezer burnt over time, and I've had some finicky eaters that wouldn't touch them when they're that old. Other than that, I see no real problem with ziplocs.

I'm in agreement here.

Re: Tell me what you think....

I like your idea about shipping...if you can make it work profitably.  I'm sure guys like rodent pro have just figured up the easiest and most cost effective method is shipping that huge box for $$$...sure wish they would do smaller amounts...that might be a good niche for you.  I guarantee you are on my list next time I need some!

I like vaccum sealing... as mike indicated, i order a large amount once a year...I'd sure rather have say, a couple bags of 25 mice vaccum sealed than one big bag of 100 getting freezer burned by the end of the season.

Good idea on an organized delivery...not sure how many folks attend the central ar chapter...but I know more of them are keepers as opposed to herpers...and showing up to something like that and advertising ahead of time could make you some $ and help folks out by not having to pay $$$ shipping.  Also, and I've only been to the tulsa show...but there are several reptile shows around...theres a guy in tulsa that has a table set up with rodents for sale, live and frozen...He's always got a lot of business when I've been there...that might be another outlet for selling large quantities.

Good luck on your endevor..and I'll be lookin you up next time I need some rodents!

Re: Tell me what you think....

I would be in on a nwa run or a shipment if several nwa people wanted to do one big order to save on the shipping.
I like the ziplocks maybe just doing smaller bags.  Like 25 of the mice in 4 bags instead of 100 in one bag.  I agree that once you open the vaccumed bags you would end up in a ziplock anyways.  Let me know if you are gonna head this way.

Thanks for all of the great input! We will definitely be going with the smaller quantities. It looks like we won't be able to vacuum pack at first, but I do believe that we'll be able to offer vacuum packing as an alternative in the future. I will look into CAHS and see what we can arrange there. I've been wanting to go to one of their meetings anyway. I really like the idea of coordinated shipments or deliveries. I don't go to the shows so this would let me meet some more reptile enthusiasts.  This is getting really exciting!
