Topic: Father's Day

Happy Father's Day smile  to all members who are fathers.  As I've mentioned before, my father died when I was 9, but I can be thankful that he helped me catch my first snake (garter) when I was 6.  He mis-IDed several snakes.  I'd say he had above-average snake knowledge for a high school graduate S. Ark outdoorsman in the 1960s(not that that's saying much!)
He thought a juvie rat snake was 'some kind of rattlesnake',(killed it roll ) and made me let a hognose go sad  b/c he thought it might be a copperhead.  Once, I had a ringneck hang on to my finger, and the library book we had showed 'Mildly Venomous Snakes' with a flathead snake that (kinda) had a light ring near it neck and he got a little freaked out, then calmed down(I guess he decided it looked more like a ringneck)
He saw a juvie water snake(broad-banded, I'm pretty sure) and we argued.(I was 8)  I said 'watersnake', and he said 'Cotton...uh...copper...it's poisonous!  I'll show you its fangs', and killed it.  He carefully pried its mouth open and looked inside and, for a few seconds he looked confused frowned and looked again.  Then he looked a little embarrassed, but grinned, and pointed to the fangless mouth with his pocketknife blade and said, 'Those are his teeth.'
Those times with my dad have made me want to help people familiarize themselves with snakes and share their knowledge with their children.

Re: Father's Day

lol..None of us are perfect, and it wasn't like reptile education was all that prevalent then.  Those are great memories though, thank you for sharing them!  smile

Happy Father's Day Daddies!
