Topic: Snake a day #1

Today is the first day of my "a snake aday quest". For the next seven days weather and health permitting, im going to find at least one wild snake, catch and photograph it. Here is day #1's find. I was working a rock pile and flushed this almost 5' Black Racer. I have caught racers in Florida and South Carolina and this one acted the same way. It tried to bite my head off!!!! She was scared up pretty good. I didn't want to stress her out to much so i let her go on her way. Day #1 in the books!!!!!!

something about that first photo... snake, foot on snake, cigarette butt next to snake... whats wrong with free handling a racer?  i find that they are much easier than water snakes (in some cases)

Well, I don't smoke for one and I needed both hands to take my tight leather gloves off so I could get camera out of it's case and iPhone out of my pants pocket. I needed three hands and I was by myself. I was putting very little pressure on the snake as it was able to wiggle out on it's own. Luckily she coiled up in the middle of the dirt road and I was able to take a few pictures.

Yeah Sean doesn't smoke..Ponge wasn't around to pick up the cigarette butts someone else left behind,  tongue  and Sean sorta FORGOT HIS HERPING PAL IN PEA RIDGE!!  sad

Yeah right sean I know you were stomping all over it and burning it with a cig after the photo's.  What is the difference in pinning it with a boot and a hook?  Either way it is equally stressful to the animal.  I have used anything within arms reach for a bitey snake.  Not saying I never get tagged but I will try to avoid it if possible.

Seriously, if you think about it, the boot is better than a hook, being that the weight is more distributed in a wider area (sort of like gentle giants) vs a concentrated area of a hook pinning it to the ground. 

Seth, you don't have to get bit, just take John with you..LOL! Our resident pin cushion. big_smile

I suppose if anyone doubts Sean's herping skills, they could just go herping with him and see for themselves. wink
