Topic: First Federal Bank’s 29th Annual Turtle Races

I decided to make a return trip to the Harrison Turtle Races this year: First Federal Bank’s 29th Annual Turtle Races.

My last and only previous attendance was in 2008.  I'll keep comments to a minimum, but the basic setup and experience was very similar to 2008.  I was thankful temperatures were so cool, instead of the scorching hot days we've had recently.  It lightly sprinkled the whole time of the races and well into the afternoon.  There were 293 entries this year; slightly down from the 364 reported in 2008.  Despite my good intentions of arriving early, I showed up literally 3-5 minutes before races began.

It was pretty hard to get a good look at every single turtle, since early heats were run concurrently in 2 different circles, but I did spot this one!!!  Just the reason for my attendance...my first Arkansas Ornate!!!

Just to be sure...  Got a couple of funny looks when I asked if I could see the bottom their turtle.  HA!

Another Ornate appears!  ...unfortunately, this one came from near St. Louis, MO.

And this was the carapace of the MO Ornate...  (Somehow, I noticed the carapace flat top while it was racing.)

Gave me a little bit of a buzz...but just a well-patterned Three-toed.

The AR Ornate made it all the way to the final race; probably would have come in 4th, but only 1st-3rd got trophies.  The "owners" were kind enough for me to get a few pictures after the races and shared some information about when and where it had been found.

Marked up plastron...check.

With temps still very mild and a light sprinkle continuing to fall, I decided to try my own luck and headed toward the area of the Ornate capture.  I saw some potential habitat areas and did come across this:

At another stop at a creek...

Sorry to end on the downer with the dead turtle, but seeing the Ornate and getting some information about it was worth the trip!

Oh yeah...  Only heard/saw one turtle drop this year.  A little boy was holding his turtle, then THUMP!  Right on its back on the pavement.  Ouch.   sad

yikes! Some cute turtles there! Do they keep them as pets? Or release them after the races?  Love the paint jobs with the flags, that was pretty cute. lol  I probably shouldn't show Serenity.  I had a hard time convincing her years ago why it was  NOT a good idea to paint the gator's toe nails.

I'm about to have an abruptly.

Surprised you didn't try to talk them out of that ornate for release back at that spot...Looked like a nice reproductive age female.  What a shame.

The vast majority are released, I believe.  They do encourage contestants to release their turtles back into their "natural habitat", but I would feel better if it were "as close to original capture as possible".

Yeah, they pretty much say "come eat me", don't they?   roll

Yes, one softshell.  Just so happened it wasn't going to dry out this day; rain kept everything pretty wet.

I didn't specifically ask for possession of the ornate.  It did cross my mind, but human relations feed into the situation, and you just kind of feel your way through it without being too pushy, etc.  I did strongly encourage them to release it back where found.  They seemed a little concerned about it going back onto their driveway (maybe close to the road?), so I said as close as possible that was reasonably safe (not that the turtle isn't going to crawl where it wants anyway).  I felt reasonably sure the turtle was going back to its "home".  The owners were pretty nice about it and impressed/surprised they had come up with something so rare.

Oh, and I did ask the guy that brought in the MO Ornate--in kind of a "you better do this" manner--if he was going to be able to return his turtle where found.  He said he was.

When I lived in Russellville around 2003-2006, I was getting gas one time and this little kid pulled out an ornate that they picked up crossing the road.  I knew what it was and that it was illegal to be in possession of, but i didn't say anything, the kid was really happy about the turtle.

I'm not sure how I feel about all of this. I can only imagine if all of those turtles were carried home as pets (even if re-released later on) it could damage the population in that area. I'm not big on the paint on the shells either.

Oh but what I wouldn't give to see an ornate!

Spreading the love of turtles to everyone!!!

I tend to agree about the paint and population issues. Ornates are not all that common in Arkansas from what I have read.
