Go to Worldofballpythons.com. They have the best in depth guide I've seen for pairings and combinations. Good luck!
I recommend reading "The Complete Ball Python" By Kevin McCurley and "Designer Morphs" by John Berry. Loads of good info on morphs and combos.
thanks what morphs are still doing good as far as price?
Albinos, lesser, spider, mojave, pastels are all codominant and under $350 usually
Albino is not codom. I am sure Adam knew that though. Come on Adam get it together.
Adam's secretly a blonde.. ![]()
Personally I don't think you should be looking in to ball pythons and thinking about money. At this point, you should just figure out which ones you like to look at the most, and get those....because odds are you'll be looking at them a lot waiting for anything to sell. Unless you have the cash to dish out and get a bunch of older animals that are still costly (lav albinos, clowns, pieds), you're not going to get rich off of them. If you like spiders, get spiders (but watch out for the wobble!). Myself...I love honeybees...even though I'm not a huge fan of bps overall. If I was going to try to put together a group, I'd get a male honeybee (hypo spider), female spider het hypo, and a few female het hypos or a female hypo. To get a group like that you'd be looking at about $1500-2000 depending on their ages.
I'll give you a huge hint though when you start shopping around for bps. Take a look through Kingsnake or Fauna's bp classifieds. See how many people are "getting out of balls" or "selling the entire collection." A lot of times, these folks are just tired of working with finicky eaters, or animals that are slightly more animated than salad tongs, and will cut huge price breaks for groups. It's worth a shot. Heck, you should even cruise CraigsList. Just a couple weeks ago, I saw an adult female pastel and an adult male spider in the Fort Smith area CL. I've seen albinos on there before too.
Good luck!
See, and I'm the total opposite, each to their own, but if I am going to fork out the money on a pretty pet rock, I want to at least know the genetics, and who the breeder was. You can't normally get that information off of CL.
I like Pieds, and they appear to be holding their monetary value in the BP morph world.
I agree with Chance. Ball Pythons SUCK!!!!!!!!!
I like Ball Pythons, each to their own.
I think if you speak to any snake breeder, they'll tell you, you aren't going to get rich on breeding snakes unless you invest a metric butt ton of money on buying something that's guaranteed to produce something truly unique or rare.
You'll usually be lucky if you break even, or come up with the profits enough to improve caging. LOL
It's a fun hobby, however.
Several things to keep in mind:
It's highly competitive out there if you are seriously wanting to make a business out of it. You have to have EXCELLENT customer service. You'll need a terms of service, a business goal of what morphs you wish to produce, a good grasp of genetics, and strong knowledge of breeding.
Everyone is breeding Ball Pythons, Burms, Retics, and Boas.
Therefore, you are going to have to REALLY stand out with something unusual, and TOP quality genetics, in order to "make a name for yourself".
In order to stand out, you're going to need to invest in quality stock, known genetics, and keep detailed records of genetics.
Otherwise, you are just another "hobby breeder", and you can't expect people to pay top dollar for bottom dollar snakes.
I've seen quite a few people go into the "I'm going to breed boas, etc" and they look for the cheapest deal on CL, fauna, adoptions, etc. There's no quarantine, no known backgrounds, no genetic info. It's just muddying the lines and throwing out random snakes without any clue as to possible defects in the genes. Many of these people get in over their heads, when their animals don't produce as expected, or the sales slack. The snakes' well being suffers, and their few breeding projects, are producing barely average animals.
Set yourself apart from the pack, and you will do much better.
Ball Pythons are good for something!!!!!
Ball Pythons are good for something!!!!!
lol!!
I am personally not a big fan of ball pythons. There are a lot of people breeding them as well. That being said if you like ball pythons get some, I am sure everyone doesn't like what I keep. Get what you want though not what you think is gonna make you money because you will probably be dissapionted. I do really like the looks of the good looking lessers though.
oh I have no plans on getting rich just a little feed money back but I would like to breed and I don't realy want to breed something that is not in I like clowns and g stripes I have wanted a albino ever since the 90's when bob clark showed his in reptile mag ball python's are not my favorite but I do like there colors I don't like the going off feed thing I like the bigger snakes but till I get building up I am only keeping my boa she is already making my grandma nervous and she is not even that big and the reason I got younger is I don't want somebody's finicky eaters problem I had that problem before
I am half way cutting up about the Ball thing. I had them and bred them. My good friend forked out $60,000 for his collection and nows he's trying to sell the entire collection for $15,000 racks and all. Like Courtney and Seth said, if you like them go for it!!!!!!!
