Topic: 7 foot 9 inch Black Rat.

4 years ago wile weed eating by my old barn I accidently killed a very large black snake. I guess it was just hanging out in the shade but the grass was so tall I couldnt see it. We measured it at 7foot9. I was amazed at the size of it! I felt terrible for killing such an awesome creature.  Ive had a new respect for them and their habatat ever scince. Now I have my first pet snake and loven her. Anyone seen a Black Rat longer than that?

That is a LARGE one!!!!! I've seen 6 footers but never a 7 footer. Your snake was very old for sure.

Re: 7 foot 9 inch Black Rat.

We've found a lot of big ones out at our old house.  Obviously NO 7ft-er but a nice sized black rat.

Re: 7 foot 9 inch Black Rat.

We had one several years ago that would give the 7' 9" one a run for it's money. I could hold it, with arm extended over my head, and there were still several coils on the ground. This one developed a taste for goose eggs. Try getting a very full snake out of rabbit wire, with a gander on the outside trying to protect the goose, and the old goose on the inside of the pen who is freaking out because a big snake just ate one of her eggs. That was a "fun" morning! (The old goose never would sit on eggs after that!) They can be a little hard on egg production, but they are worth their weight in gold for rodent control!

Your right! I didnt mention that this snake was eating 7 or 8 eggs a day.. After it was gone my egg production trippled. And I just thought the hens were hot! Ha!

Re: 7 foot 9 inch Black Rat.

They do love eggs! (the little monsters!) smile I always wondered how they digested those goose eggs as the shells are heavy duty. Do they break them internally, or is their digestive tract capable of dissolving the shell?

Re: 7 foot 9 inch Black Rat.

Im guessing they dissolve them just as they do bone. Both are made of calcium right?

How ever they do it, it certainly didn't seem to both this one. Next time I saw it there was no big bulge where the egg was.

Any creature that can pass goose egg shells is one tough critter!
