Topic: The most dangerous animal out there is...

A TICK!!!!  At least that's my opinion of late.  Several weeks ago I started noticing unusual symptoms like painful joints and extreme fatigue.  I went to the Doc for a physical and some blood work last Friday.  Saturday morning I could hardly get out of bed.  I had chills, fever, a slight cough, and a most interesting bullseye-shaped rash under my right armpit.  I went ahead and went to work, but barely made it through the day.  My symptoms got progressively worse and I went home and directly to bed.  The next morning I had all the same symptoms, but WORSE!!!!!  I went to the Doc again and he said that I had a tick borne illness, probably Lyme Disease.  I don't remember getting that exact bite, but I live in the woods and I remove ticks from my body all the time.  In any case, the Doc said that I could have received the bite weeks ago!  I've learned a hard lesson.  I haven't taken precautions against ticks up until now, but that is going to change.  I don't think I've ever been this sick, and a little insect repellent might have spared me this miserable condition.   Hopefully this story encourages some of you to take the bug spray!!

I spread that seven dust around my parents house and it seems to keep them away.  I live in town so I don't have to worry too much with them at home.  Not sure how you could do it around your house with all your mammals but it says it is safe for dogs once it dries.  Sorry you got sick.

Isn't Sevin lethal to herps?

Re: The most dangerous animal out there is...

Not sure about herps, but when I was kid we used to literally coat our dogs with seven dust to get rid of ticks and fleas.  All of our dogs lived to be a ripe old age, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't toxic to that particular mammal.  It could be deadly to herps for all I know.  I have a buddy that's pretty leery about using pesticides and he still uses Seven on his garden because according to him it's pretty innocuous unless you're an insect.

Not the .05% Sevin dust.  I wouldn't put it directly on them, but it's pretty low.   Lyme will give you joint pain for a looong time, Marc.  Take care of yourself!

I'm about to have an abruptly.

I see skinks all over their place.  Occasionally a snake or two.  Found a pygmy in the flower beds when I was younger.  They live in the woods so the ticks and chiggers are pretty bad.

Kathy Love dusts her corn snakes using the " shake and bake " method. She puts them in a plastic bag full of 5-10% seven dust and shakes the bag around.

Yeah.  Now that you mention it, it seems like I have heard of treating snakes with it.  It can't be that safe for amphibians though...

I've pretreated substrate  with Sevin before I bought at PetCo.  I wouldn't personally shake my snake around in a pesticide dust no matter how mild it is.

I'm about to have an abruptly.

I use "Happy Trails" aromatherapy mist. I spray it all over myself and my dogs. Its made of all natrual oils and is safe for children and animals. I dont care to put poison directly on my body so I started using this a few years ago. You might smell like a hippy, but you wont have bugs or ticks:)  Glad  you are on the mend, hope this helps!

Thanks for all the suggestions!  Fever is gone.  Just aching joints now.  Going in today for the "all clear".
