Topic: Latrodectus mactans

Friend of mine called and had a BBBW (big, beautiful, black widow) with 2 eggs and slings hanging out by his front door.  I doubt the slings will survive captivity, although it should be interesting trying to raise them.  Mami seems to have perked up since getting home. We'll see how it goes.  I've kept adult widows on and off for a few years, and they are fairly straightforward to raise, thankfully I have an experienced arachnofreak to help me out with the young.

Haha I can respect their beauty but I definitely do not like spiders! How do you keep them? They do have some cool colors!

Re: Latrodectus mactans

When I've kept them, I've used larger deli cups, or plastic containers with lids.  I usually use forest bedding for substrate, but since there are slings, I've left it bare.  Right now these are in a big plastic jar.

I put a piece of bark, or small branches in to give her something to build a web on.  It's fairly easy to remove the bark using hemos or small feeding tongs, spider and all.  Then I can clean out the container, and just replace the piece of bark.  Room temps are fine, as they really are hardy animals to keep. I make sure they don't get too hot/cold and feed it a variety of insects. I think they are some of the easier to keep spiders, just don't get bit!

Haha nice! Do you just catch grasshoppers, flies, etc. to feed them??

Re: Latrodectus mactans

Sometimes I will.   I have my Dubia colony too, so I can offer small roaches.   I have TONS of large grasshoppers around the yard, so I usually sacrifice those.  I put in a couple of aphids for the slings, but I think they are still too large.   I've never kept slings, so this is new.  I'll try to squish a grasshopper in the container later and see if they will eat it.  Once they start getting a little bigger (if I manage to keep them alive) I'll separate them out into smaller groups, 400 subadult black widows in one container isn't my idea of a party.  lol

You didn't already know that? And I'm sure you will yell if you find more! lol
yikes   "AAAAAGGGHHH!!!!"

I'll stick to to the adults for now. I usually have friends that like to keep widows.   I believe there was also a group that was doing a venom research, and they were collecting both Loxosceles reclusa & L. mactans from our area.  I don't know if that's still ongoing, but if you turn up several, I can contact them.

Re: Latrodectus mactans

Nice! I used to keep a few of these. I even sold them for awhile to arachnid hobbyist friends online. When I was in Monticello they were plentiful!

I am the Earth. Please stop hurting me. I want us to once again live in harmony. As One. Remember! Live with heart...

They're pretty plentiful around here..lol When I lived in Springdale, I found 4.  3 were at my house, one was hanging out of the ceiling in the cooler doorway at my work! HAHA.
