Topic: Day Hike

Met up w/ John for some light herping in Bella Vista.  Didn't see much off Tanyard Creek.  Ok, that's an overstatement.  We saw a SPIDER, literally, that was it.  After getting skunked on Tanyard, we headed over to Lake Bella Vista Trail to check out some turtle habitat.  Saw quite a bit more there!

John spotted all of these:
Young RES

Another Midland? Nerodia ssp basking

This little area was pretty rich for herps.  John found  the RES, the Nerodia, and a large bullfrog all within about 8ft of one another.  The RES is off to the left, and the Nerodia is dead center, while the Bullfrog is off to the right hidden in sludge

Can you spot the bullfrog??  I liked to NEVER spotted it.  LOL John found it and had to literally point it out.

This is a clearwing moth. A neat moth that mimics a bumble bee.

Looks like you found some neat stuff.

Re: Day Hike

lol  Thanks Adam!  I knew it was a mimic, but had no idea where to begin.  tongue  Also saw a nice orange and black ant mimic, but didn't get a pic of it.

I'm about to have an abruptly.

Re: Day Hike

Probably try to hit up your neck of the woods soon for some herping.  Been awhile since I've made it to Devil's Den.

I'm about to have an abruptly.

Re: Day Hike

Definitely Sipedon, and a huge looking one at that. I flipped a couple babies yesterday but haven't seen an adult in a good couple months.

Re: Day Hike

That was probably around 4ft of Nerodia..It'd been eating better than my 5ft 15yr old Corn snake.  LOL
That's the second really BIG Midland I've seen, we saw a big one coiled up in a large tree trunk across from the pool at Withrow Springs park Saturday.   I got it's tail as it retreated into the burrows.  I was pretty upset.  It was an intense rusty red and slate gray banded.  VERY pretty.
The other one we saw on this hike was a decent size as well, just harder to see the full length.

I'm about to have an abruptly.
