Topic: September 2011 Year of the Turtle Newsletter and Calendar

The September 2011 Year of the Turtle Newsletter and Calendar is now ready!
Last month, we looked at some of the work of state fish and wildlife agencies in turtle conservation; this month we highlight turtle conservation activities and programs of Federal fish and wildlife agencies.   We also highlight efforts, and ways you can help, to conserve sea turtles.

View or download our September Year of the Turtle Newsletter! Our September Year of the Turtle News issue highlights efforts undertaken by Federal fish and wildlife agencies around the country, including a spotlight on marine turtle conservation through the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and other sea turtle conservation partners.  We offer you more Citizen Science (volunteer) opportunities, and let you know how you can help to prevent plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways.  We also provide an interview and a biography on two prominent turtle experts: Dr. James Gibbs and Dr. Bruce Bury, respectively.  We’ve got some great stories about western pond turtle conservation, and we share the recent activities of our Southwest PARC partners.  Enjoy!

We congratulate Andy Adams for his winning Loggerhead Sea Turtle calendar photo!  This turtle is going places – making a break for the breaking waves.  He photographed this adorable hatchling in North Carolina just as it was headed out to sea.  Andy’s photo was chosen as the September featured photo out of several hundred photos received since our contest began.  All submitted photos will continue to be considered for future calendar months, as well as for use (with photo credit) in other YoT products and documents.   More information about our ongoing photo contest is available at www.yearoftheturtle.org. Give us your best shot!
