Topic: Southern Painted Turtles

I saw on this site that southern painted turtles are native to Arkansas. I have been to many lakes in central Arkansas but have never seen any. Does anyone know where I could find some to take pictures of them. They are the neatest painted turtle!  Thanks, Austin.

How many spots do you need?   wink  I didn't take the photo posted above, BTW.  But I figured if you could walk a trail, see some turtles that weren't so easily spooked by people, and get some similar pictures...it'd be pretty difficult to beat that!

Anyone else inclined to offer additional site localities should please PM Austin.

(Sorry to be this way, but I'll be pulling down any posts that are too site specific and/or not already widely known.)

Maybe someone will PM.  I know there are Painted Turtles close to--and probably even in the city limits of--Little Rock, but these are backwater/swampy-habitat turtles.  It isn't always easy to access where they are found.  You might need a boat or at least waders.   wink

Try around Lake Conway and Faulkner lake. There is good habitat around those areas. You might try cruising the roads around lakes, sloughs and swamps during the day. I saw a painted turtle crossing the road once near a swamp.
