The second one appears to be a midland brown snake. Totally harmless. Is the person responsible for it someone I know?

Re: What did my (very uninformed) friend kill?

No Eric. She's someone I worked with at MDA. They live out in the middle of nowhere in Ozark and her husband works opposite schedule of her. So when she's home with her six kids (yes, six! lol) he isn't around and she's driven by fear to protect the kiddos who play out in the yard. Sadly, most people think that killing snakes is the best way to stay safe around them. Makes no sense to me either, but she did it to protect her kids (so she thinks) rather than because she's a snake hater.
I commented on the picture on facebook and told her it was harmless and probably helpful in some way. She hasn't commented back.

Unfortunately I've noticed a strong trend in Arkansas of the old "only good snake is a dead one" mentality. I think if we, as a herp society could get more organized and do more reptile education in the schools, it might not hurt.

I'm about to have an abruptly.

I would like to see a booklet with a list of benefits of snakes and why we should not kill them. Maybe if people would see their importance in nature, at least some folks might think twice about killing them.
