Topic: 2011 year in review

I had a pretty good year for finding snakes in the yard.
I had a very successful intervention this past weekend when one of the cats had found a small Prarie Kingsnake (about 12 uinches total length). Snake was quickly and easily removed and relocated. The cat was just getting started with it so the snake was unharmed.
We had a flurry of Ringed Necked snakes of various sizes right before the cold snap a couple of weeks ago. WE got a couple of of the house and I saw a couple n the yard.
I found a Red-BelliedSnake earlier in the summer and a Rough Earth Snake early fall.
I had a couple of FULL grown beautiful Copperheads this past spring when temps were warming. I was expecting to get to see some this fall as temps dropped, but I did not have the pleasure of seeing any.
In the past I have also has a Texas Ratsnake in the yard and an Eastern Hog Nosed Snake.
I had a few snake encounters while doing my creek fishing thing. I saw several cottonmouths from a rod length away and a fair number of watersnakes, but I couldn't swear to what species I saw.
Looking forward to finding more in 2012.

I'm glad you have had some success. It had been so dry in south Arkansas this year, we have not seen much.

Seaking of which... The rains and my availability finally matched up and I got my Ringed Sallie tonight.  Also seen were Gray Treefrogs, American Toads, Spring Peepers, and S. Leopard Frogs.

Good find.  I opted for the surer get on the Ringed because of time limits, but it crossed my mind that the Tigers could be starting to prowl, too.

Re: 2011 year in review

My son loves salamanders. We spent some good times searching them out. However, my son is a freshman at MSU in Springfeld now. Our yard is too rocky and too sloped to have very many salamanders. Frogs I got.
I did a little reading on salamanders in Arkansas a while back and was surprised to see many of the best times to find them are pretty darn chilly. Early spring when temps may be hoving in the upper 30's.
Good damp night in the 30's. Brrrrrrrrrr
